India (MNN) ― In the new global economy, an education in India can mean the difference between getting out of poverty or being trapped in it. It can mean a world of freedom to a young person, but living in a country where roughly half the population is illiterate may be a daunting obstacle.
For many school-aged children, they can't attend school or even begin thinking about reaching self-sufficiency for lack of transportation. India Partners believes that by investing in the education of poor children today, they can see a generation of able adults as harvest.
As a result, in Andhra Pradesh, a Christian school partner (Karunamaya, or Mercy School, built by India Partners) has classes filled with children who can attend with the help of India Partners' bicycles.
However, in mid-May a fire raged through a village, and seven bikes were destroyed. India Partners wants not only to replace those seven but also provide one to every 6th grader at their school. They're hoping to provide about 20 new bikes to the students, with the understanding that if they stay in school and graduate, they'll be able to keep the bicycle. It costs just $55 to provide a student with the first step toward a future.
In all they do, India Partners works through the compassion and wisdom of Jesus Christ. They are working under the banner of a U.S. Christian development and relief organization committed to supporting self-help ministry projects in India. If you can help, click here.
