International (MNN) ― Cleft palates and cleft lips are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly. They aren't allowed to attend school or hold a job, and many face very difficult lives filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache.
The good news is that they can be helped with surgery which costs as little as $250 and takes as little as 45 minutes.
That's where CURE International comes in. They're looking for plastic and reconstructive surgeons who want to visit their partnering hospitals in Africa.
Teams are needed for one or two week periods to help with cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries. Specialists can teach national residents and surgeons the latest techniques while helping children.
CURE's hospitals have regular, full time medical staff, as well as a reputation for a high-level of care and medical sophistication. They're looking for teams to go to Uganda, Malawi, Kenya, Zambia or Ethiopia.
Spiritual discipleship is a normal part of their process, much like medical follow-up. CURE is also developing surgical training programs in cooperation with Smile Train.
