International (MNN) ― On January 6, 2008, at approximately 4:30 a.m. Association of Baptists for World Evangelism's President Emeritus Dr. Wendell W. Kempton entered the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after a lengthy battle with cancer.

The 26 years of his leadership were a period of tremendous growth in the number of missionaries serving with ABWE and expansion into numerous countries of the world.

New avenues of ministry and opportunity have been pursued. Under Dr. Kempton's leadership, ABWE made its major move from the greater-Philadelphia area to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1993.

Dr. Kempton was surrounded by his wife and children at his home in Lititz, PA, as he passed from earth to heaven. Please be in prayer for Dr. Kempton's wife, Ruth, and immediate and extended family during this time.

The family is at peace that Wendell is no longer suffering from the cancer that took his life but is now experiencing the eternal life and joy he proclaimed to so many people around the world.

A public memorial service is being planned for Friday afternoon, January 11, in Lancaster, PA. Details soon to follow.
