India (MNN) ― India Partners is building a new home for orphans in India. Little Lamps Children's Home will be expanded to care for 24 more children.
Little Lamps began with five children in 2003. Pastor Eliezer Devasahayam and his wife, Prema Kumari, took them into their own and added more children over the years. Now they care for 16 children in addition to their own two children, and their house is bursting at the seams.
A generous donor provided them with more land next door to the current facility. Other supporters have given a total of $17,000 toward the $25,000 needed for the expansion, and construction has begun.
Prema and Eliezer have had to turn some needy children away from their door. One little boy became a street urchin after both his parents died in an accident. His grandfather is old and can barely care for himself, so he begged Little Lamps to care for his grandson. The new facility will provide a home for children like this little boy.
Esther is the name of the last child that Little Lamps was able to squeeze in. She was abandoned as a newborn and then adopted, but her adoptive family fell on hard times. Her father squandered the money on liquor, and her mother tragically contracted leprosy. When her mother could no longer care for Esther, she begged Little Lamps to give her daughter a home. Now Esther has loving care, a happy home, and the opportunity to receive an education.
