He told Compass Direct that the Chinese people fully enjoy freedom of religion, and said allegations made by the US State Department are groundless. However, he did not address the increased pressure put on unregistered evangelical church groups by the Chinese government. Chinese Christians now number nearly 10 million and the lack of trained leaders has caused the authorities to cast a suspicious eye on the church.
