Haiti (MNN) ― Gunmen attacked the house of the justice minister this week (March 22), underscoring the unrest building to the upcoming elections this fall.
The shootings came after U.N. peacekeepers and Haitian police raided two rural towns to remove armed ex-soldiers. Two of the peacekeepers were killed in the skirmish. The struggle to disarm street gangs and ex-soldiers will continue as people fear their continued conflict could spill over into elections in October and November.
That issue is also one of concern for Compassion International. There are a number of Compassion projects based in areas most likely to see violence. One project has suspended normal activities because the situation is too unsafe in their location in the slums.
Staff are visiting children in their homes and looking for new locations. Other projects located in dangerous areas are continuing as normal, but staff are monitoring the situation on a regular basis.
Please pray for wisdom and safety for the workers as they share the hope of Christ with the children.
