India (MNN) ― Thousands of people in India are turning to Christ every week in India. Churches are growing. More people are becoming pastors, missionaries and evangelists. In addition, many Hindu nationalists aren't happy, and they're taking action.
Mission India's Doctor Kamala Chiranjeevi says forced re-conversions are becoming more common. Chiranjeevi says it's a well coordinated effort. "It's a Hindu religious group, raising 100,000 coordinators, sending them to every district. They are watching every movement. If there is any Christian activity they are going and attacking them and beating them."
However, the attacks are just the beginning, says Chiranjeevi as these people are taken to the local Hindu temple. "Inside the temple they are asking them to renounce their faith. And they will apply the red mark to their forehead. They say some rituals. And, they take an Oath."
According to Chiranjeevi, the re-conversion attacks are growing. "It is growing in Gujarat. Gujarat's chief minister is a Hindu fanatic. He wants Gujarat to become a Hindu state, and, also in Orissa."
But, these attacks aren't have any impact on people coming to Christ. "Many people are coming to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. People are accepting. People are being baptized more than it ever happened in the past."
Mission India is helping with that effort through their Institute of Community Transformation program, a two year training program. Chiranjeevi says there are more than 1,000 in the field today. "They have selected their own places. During this two year time, they have to visit 1,200 homes irrespective of caste and creed. They have to go and tell about Jesus Christ."
Prayer is needed for protection of staff as they travel. Funding is also needed to help this training program.
