The farming village of Guinsaugon on Leyte Island, 420 miles southeast of Manila, disappeared under the collapse of the neighboring mountainside.
The devastation of the village is nearly complete. Media reports say three houses remain standing in a region previously populated by nearly 3,000.
Officials fear that continuous rain in the province could slow down rescue efforts. Latest reports indicate some 50 survivors have been pulled from a school buried in the disaster.
World Vision has projects in Maasin City, about 60 miles from the village. The organization has worked extensively on the Island of Leyte. As recently as January 2004, the organization responded to assist flooding victims in the area.
World Vision's team says those left behind desperately need help with basic survival needs. Please pray for their staff as they act as the hands and feet of Christ in this situation.
