Mozambique (MNN) ― Christians are beginning to gear up their efforts to help thousands of people left homeless by flooding in Mozambique.  The United Nations says this disaster is likely to get worse before it gets better.  More than 30 people have already been killed as a result of the flood waters.

Food for the Hungry's Matt Ellingson says they've been working in areas since the 1980's. He describes the situation. "There have been 60,000 people who have been evacuation and another 100,000 people who are in grave danger, but we are estimating that it will impact right around 300,000 people."

FHI is already involved, says Ellingson. "Food for the Hungry is partnering with International organizations to provide emergency food rations, supplementary food as well as non-food items."

The situation isn't expected to get any better. If the rains continue, he says, it's going to affect dams up-stream. "The operators of these dams many need to lift the floodgates on these dams because of structural integrity issues. If they have to do that, then the disaster will intensify greatly

While providing for their physical needs is important, Ellingson says as they work through the local church spiritual assistance also becomes important. "Our faith is central to who we are and how we do things. But, it is during these times where our faith is able to take legs and our ability to serve and love our neighbor really becomes clear."

FHI needs your prayers and also financially support to help. Ellingson says a little support can go a long way in supporting those in need both physically and spiritually.
