A new house for a family in Haiti.
Since a 2004 uprising, the United Nations Mission for the Stabilization of Haiti has had approximately 8,800 troops in Haiti to control the violence. The 2004 incident resulted in the overthrow of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Since then, the UN has recently voted to extend this peace keeping mission for another eight months. The agreement came after China pushed for a shorter mandate. Diplomats in Haiti believe this may be because of Haiti's tie with Taiwan who split with China after a civil war in 1949.
The peacekeeping mission is to rid the slums in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince of armed gangs that have power.
Within the unrest the needs of the Haitian people have not been forgotten by FHWL. They hope to build two homes in 2007.
Recently, a family gave a $900 pledge toward the building of one of these homes provided FHWL receives nine matching pledges. If there are not enough pledges to fund the home, the family will put money toward shipping the next formula donation.
Also, they have submitted their application for Pilgrim House #17 to Pilgrim Lutheran Church of Indianapolis. If the application is approved, the funds will be available in July.
