Zimbabwe (MNN) — It’s hard to hear the Gospel when your stomach is growling.

Anna Marie is a widow living in rural Zimbabwe. After her husband’s death, she was left to provide for her three children. Poverty engulfed the family, and she did not know where her next meal would come from.

However, Global Aid Network’s Food Program partner in her community stepped up to help. They provided the much needed food for her family. They got her a job so that she could continue to provide for her family. But most of all they taught her the love of Jesus.

“I never knew the love of God until now,” says Anna Marie. “First the people at the church provided food. Then they gave me a job caring for crops in the church gardens, so I could provide for my family. They looked after me, taught me the Word of God, and showed me how to pray, love, and serve others.

“I’m so grateful for finding out about the love of God. My family still has difficult times, but I know I don’t have to worry anymore.”

This story resembles many stories of the Bible. In Luke 10, Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan being to true neighbor to a broken man. Jesus showed unconditional love to the sick and the lost. Often, by caring for their physical needs first, he opened the doors to share the truth about his Father. He could have proclaimed the Gospel in any way he chose, and he chose to heal and provide.

In our day and age, we have so many opportunities to continue this work. There are many more people in Anna Marie’s situation who are hungry for food and for Jesus.
