Clean water? There’s an app for that!

By May 16, 2013

International (MNN) — If there’s an iPhone application for dog whistles, there’s probably an app for just about anything.

Living Water International (LWI) got creative and made the Give Well app six months ago for peer-to-peer fundraising.

Here at the six-month mark, LWI announced Give Well app users raised over $124,000. The proceeds go to fund clean water projects around the world.

Here’s how it works. You can go to the app on the Living Water Web site and create a Give Well page to sponsor clean water in a specific country. Then people can sponsor you in projects like giving up your birthday gifts, hosting a bake sale, or running a marathon.

Your personal Give Well fundraising page tracks the proceeds you earn and you can watch how others’ fundraising efforts are progressing, as well. The interaction lets users encourage each other and give support in reaching goals. Around 340 users are currently involved in Give Well fundraising.

According to the Give Well page, at least 783 million people don’t have access to clean water. That’s 1 out of every 9 people!

LWI has completed projects in 26 countries to bring community-based clean water solutions. This ranges from digging wells to hygiene education.

Ultimately, Living Water exists "to demonstrate the love of God by helping communities acquire desperately needed clean water, and to experience ‘Living Water’—the gospel of Jesus Christ—which alone satisfies the deepest thirst."
