Haiti packing event to feed 3,000

By December 30, 2010

Haiti (MNN) — Just a fortnight away from the one-year anniversary of Haiti's devastating quake, thousands are still left hungry and homeless.

Bright Hope International was helping to feed children in Haiti long before the quake, but since the disaster, the ministry has ramped up their efforts. In a span of just four days, Bright Hope plans to pack enough meals to feed 2,950 children one meal every school day.

The total number of meals needed is enormous, already presenting a significant challenge. (You can donate funds for a meal here.) But the bigger issue at hand is actually the preparation necessary to feed so many children. Packing that many meals would take weeks to prepare without the help of heavy machinery, right?

Bright Hope doesn't think so. They are taking four days, January 12 through 15, to pack enough meals to feed 2,950 school children one warm meal for every school day. Packing so many thousands of meals will only take 10 sessions of 100 volunteers each. 1,000 volunteers total are needed.

If you live near Hoffman Estates, Illinois, this project should be easy for you to get to. Even if you don't live nearby, think about taking a road trip or using up some frequent flyer miles to help prepare enough food to feed nearly 3,000 suffering children, many of whom became orphaned and homeless all in one day.

If you would like to help these kids, sign up to volunteer at the Bright Hope Volunteer Central page or call 224-520-6100. Volunteer sessions will be held at the following times:

Wednesday, January 12 from 6-8 pm; Thursday, January 13 from 4-6 pm or 7-9 pm; Friday, January 14 from 4-6 pm or 7-9 pm; Saturday, January 15 from 8-10 am, 10:30am-12:30 pm, 1-3 pm, 3:30-5:30 pm or 6-8 pm.

Of course, the majority of you may be unable to make it on such short notice to Illinois, but you can still get involved. Sponsor meals through Bright Hope, or help with their other various projects in Haiti. Watch a video of the children you will be helping here.

Finally, make sure to keep this ministry in your prayers. Pray for an overwhelming response to the packing event. And pray for the children who will receive these gifts in Christ's name. Pray that the Lord would be glorified as His people come together to reach a suffering nation with the love of Christ.
