Africa (MNN) — AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis are just a few major health issues facing Africa today. Many health and relief organizations agree, and are studying the problem in depth.
A 105-member delegation from the United States, hosted by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson just returned from Africa. During their 10-day journey to Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia and Cameroon, they studied pertinent health issues and discussed probable solutions.
Among organizations such as UNICEF, USAID, and World Medical Relief, only one was committed to the water crisis in Africa–Living Water International. LWI is an interdenominational Christian ministry committed to providing safe drinking water to those in developing nations. “There are more people dying everyday because of water-related diseases than AIDS, cancer and diabetes combined, ” according to Jerry Wiles, president of Living Water International. “Most people aren’t aware of that, but once they get the facts, it really changes the way they feel about these issues.” This fact became apparent as many of the delegates were able to directly experience the lack of viable water sources at hospitals, schools and orphanages. Tommy Thompson expressed a newfound passion for clean water solutions.
Living Water’s ultimate goal is to provide water to 11.8 million people by 2010, in addition to providing the living water of Jesus Christ. “Ultimately, it’s the living water of the Lord Jesus that’s going to last for eternity.” says Wiles.
