Rapid response team provides medical and spiritual aid

Haiti (MNN) — The HCJB Global rapid response team is on its way to Haiti to help some of the estimated three million people affected by Tuesday's quake.

Leaving from Florida this morning, the team will arrive in Haiti sometime today, flown in by Mission Flights International.

"To bring health care relief, we're bringing a surgeon, an anesthesiologist, and nurses along to help minister to the people who are hurting," said Wayne Pederson, president of HCJB Global.

Once on the ground, Pederson said they will be partnering with Samaritan's Purse, who will provide shelter for them and a place to set up their medical care.

Pederson sees this as the way Christians should respond: "If we're truly followers of Jesus, we will not only declare the love of God verbally, we will physically demonstrate it with a heart of compassion for people that are hurting."

Providing medical aid, however, is not the only concern of the medical team and other staff at HCJB Global.

"We have had a long relationship with Radio Lumiere in Port-au-Prince. In fact, we have a person from our technology center who was working at the radio station this week … and we have not heard from him. So, we continue to be concerned and pray for our partner there, also for [the] outstanding radio ministry in Radio Lumiere–that the ministry would be protected and those people would be safe as well," Peterson said.

Currently, Radio Lumiere is off air, and HCJB Global does not know its condition. As they minister to the area, HCJB Global hopes to raise funds to repair Radio Lumiere and get it back up and running.

Ultimately, Pederson said, "We're here for the long haul, coming along and helping people cope spiritually and emotionally, as well as to recover physically and medically."

Pray for HCJB Global as they seek to minister to the hearts and bodies of the wounded and hurting people of Haiti. Pray for the safety of their missing staff member and for the staff of Radio Lumiere.
