Eritrea (MNN)–Voice of the Martyrs Canada reports 50 evangelicals are in custody, accused of “illegal” Protestant activities by Eritrea’s Defense Ministry.

Relatives say the group of group of thirty-three women and seventeen men has been subjected to harsh military conditions at the Mai Nefhee Educational Institution, a military service centre in Asmara.

The persecution, according to Compass Direct, may have even extended into the officially recognized Eritrean Orthodox Church. For the past nine months, the Synod has effectively been under government control. Over this period, 65 key members have been excommunicated.

The group were connected with the Medhane Alem Sunday School movement within the Orthodox Church, and were excommunicated on March 28.

Pray that the Eritrean believers will remain faithful and unashamed of the Gospel.
