‘Urbana: On Campus’ sparks interest in global missions

By September 26, 2012

USA (MNN) — Last week, we told you InterVarsity Christian Fellowship was taking the Urbana experience on tour. Urbana: On Campus kicked off at Harvard University last Friday, and we caught up with Urbana Director Tom Lin to see how it went.

"The turnout was phenomenal," Lin stated. "It was a very powerful event."

Lin graduated from Harvard–this year's first campus to host an Urbana: On Campus event. He committed his life to student ministry and global missions after attending Urbana 93.

"It was a joy to host the event at Harvard," he said.

Urbana: On Campus introduces students to the themes of Urbana 12, InterVarsity's 23rd student missions conference. At the kickoff event, Lin said students heard from Jim Martin and Bethany Hoang from the International Justice Mission. The speakers discussed the topic of justice.

"Bethany Hoang and Jim Martin did a fantastic job of speaking that night," said Lin.

Unlike a typical event held by campus ministries, students learn about topics specifically related to global missions. With multicultural worship and speakers involved in missions worldwide, Urbana: On Campus is designed to pique students' interest in Urbana 12.

"If they're wondering what Urbana's all about," said Lin, "it's a great place to go and get a taste of it."

InterVarsity and the Urbana: On Campus tour will visit a total of 12 campuses throughout the U.S. and Canada. Click here to see a full tour schedule. This Friday, they'll visit James Madison University and California Polytechnic.

Pray for God's will to be done.

"You can be praying that God would move the people He would want to move to register and come to Urbana 12."
