Gospel workers succumb to water borne diseases as they minister in Bombay.

By August 30, 2005

India (MNN)–Nearly a month has passed since Mumbai, India was inundated by monsoon rains.

In the wake of the initial crisis, more casualties are coming as buildings are collapsing as a result of the flooding. The structures, already old, began rotting out as they remained waterlogged. Many experts blame the casualties from the floods on the clogging urban development and poor infrastructure.

The floodwaters overwhelmed the 100-year-old stormwater drains, and were slow to recede. As it happens in crisis, calamity is visited by more disaster. Now the threat of disease is claiming more victims.

Gospel for Asia staff initially were among first emergency responders, but the newest reports indicate they are suffering from water-borne diseases.

Twelve people from GFA’s Mumbai Bible College, and area Believers Church pastors and family members have become ill.

Yet, in the midst of chaos, dedicated GFA workers have been ministering with the love of Jesus to desperate people hurting and without hope.

Pray that the spread of these life-threatening diseases will be supernaturally stopped. Pray for strength and stamina for each missionary, pastor and Bible college student ministering among flood victims as they seek to be agents of Christ’s compassion.

Most of all, please pray that the Lord will use this situation for the salvation of many.
