Hope for Algerian Christians

By May 8, 2025

Algeria (MNN) Algeria’s ongoing deterioration of religious freedom has resulted in closed churches and prosecution charges against pastors. Frank Stephenson with TWR says the current trajectory contrasts a rich regional history of Christian tradition.

“There were actually quite a few key Christian leaders that came from that area in the early centuries after Christ,” he says – Saint Augustine among them.

“So that’s quite interesting for me to keep in mind, too. This is not just a foreign land where they’ve never heard of Christ. Actually there used to be quite a presence there.”

These days, there are Christians in Algeria, but many are discouraged by the lack of resources.

“They might have to travel far to meet with other Christians, or they might feel lonely or isolated. Especially in families, if one family member becomes a Christian, it becomes really difficult.”

Opportunities to share the Gospel apart from risk of persecution are not abundant. How is TWR supporting believers in this situation?

From a media perspective, there’s the possibility of reaching out to geographic areas that are difficult to enter on the ground. Internet outreach is crucial.

“But what happens if the internet gets shut down or there are certain restrictions?” Stephenson asks. “That’s where I think media and radio play a big role.”

Stephenson says TWR can broadcast to Algeria from Europe with a strong signal. Regarding persecution in Algeria, he is encouraged by the willingness of Algerian Christians to stand firm and continue witnessing.

“Somehow the Lord provides opportunities for people, even when they’re questioned by authorities, to have an opportunity to share the hope that they have in Christ.”

Stephenson says prayer is paramount.

“Let’s ask the Lord to soften our hearts, open our hearts to maybe a specific country, people group, or part of the world. And then let’s commit to praying for our brothers and sisters in Christ.”

Perhaps you have an international neighbor. Maybe you know of a ministry that offers people hope in Christ. It could be that the Lord has already laid a specific people group or country on your heart. If that is the case, please continue to fervently bring your requests before the Lord on their behalf.

Even now, as you read this, would you pray for Algeria?

Please pray for strength and protection for Algerian believers. Pray that Christians would remain a beacon of hope, and pray that the Gospel of Jesus would continue to shine forth in darkness.
