Kenya (MNN)–A devastating drought this year has nearly wiped out this year’s crop in Kenya.
Last year’s rains were poor and set the stage for disaster if this year’s rains failed. When that happened, the impact was immediately felt by millions already on the edge.
Food prices skyrocketed nearly 50 percent, making the regular purchase of food stuffs nearly impossible for the average person. Meanwhile, livestock prices have plummeted, hitting the community relying on the income they get from the sales of cattle, sheep, goats and camels.
Without international help, aid experts say the famine will rival the one in 2000. There are an estimated 3.5 million Kenyans affected by the drought.
Audio Scripture Ministries’ Tom Dudehofer says that the crisis is likely to hit a new project in its infancy. “That’s going to impact ministry because the local churches in the area, of course, are going to feel that pinch. They’ll have family members that are affected by it. It’s going to be a challenge. They’ll have a hard time contemplating their own ability to reach out and really take over a ministry.”
Dudenhofer explains that ASM is encouraging the national staff as they work not only to take over the operations, but also lay the foundation for future outreach. “We’re in the process of encouraging them to develop a sound national ministry that can work with some other African ministries in continuing the emphasis on audio Scripture distribution.”
