Southern Baptists are planning to serve Sri Lanka’s tsunami victims for as long as it takes to make a significant difference in their lives.

Sri Lanka (MNN) — Effective and purposeful – that’s the goal of tsunami relief work done by the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.

In Sri Lanka, they’re focusing on filling in the gaps to help in ways that others have not and to minister to those who have been overlooked.

Fewer than 1-percent of Sri Lankans are evangelical Christians, with 77-percent Buddhist, 8.5-percent Muslim, and 8-percent Hindus. But the IMB is serving anyone who has need, and doing so in the Name of Christ.

The IMB has helped provide much needed Bibles, as many Bibles belonging to the Christians were washed out to sea. Disaster relief team members also helped distribute meals, kitchen sets, food packets, and many other needed items.

So many lives were devastated, people’s livelihood’s completely destroyed, and the IMB is committed to serving the people of Sri Lanka for the time it takes to make a significant difference in their lives. They want most to share Christ with the people, through serving them in obedience to God’s will and guidance, and they hope to see lives changed by the power and love of God.

Southern Baptists have contributed more than $3 million (USD) to help tsunami survivors. $3.80 buys a Bible in the Sinhala or Tamil language. $10 is enough to provide a family with food to last 5 days. $20 provides a family with a kitchen set. If you’d like to help with relief efforts, go to their website at www.imb.org. Or send your gift to “Asia Earthquake Disaster Relief,” International Mission Board, PO Box 6767, Richmond, VA 23230. All funds given will be used in relief efforts.
