The wait is over for adoption in Guatemala.

Guatemala (MNN) — Families waiting to adopt children from Guatemala may no longer be waiting. The Director for International Adoptions for Bethany Christian Services, Bruce Mossburg says “The glitch is almost over. We should be able to start processing adoptions as soon as Monday.”

Mossburg says “What happened is Guatemala tried to comply with the Hague treaty.” He says, “But, the way it was being implemented in Guatemala it was stopping adoptions. So, as of March 5th cases were stuck. Attorneys in Guatemala challenged (it) in court and the constitutional court ruled against the Hague as being in conflict with the Guatemala Constitution.”

The ruling was published Friday and that should help restore the adoption program. That means there’s an incredible need for adoptive families.

Mossburg says it’s a great opportunity to share God’s love. “The number of children needing homes and the level of poverty in Guatemala is great. The families that do well are those that are overflowing with the blessings of God who want to share those blessings by adding to their families and sharing their love with the children. And, I think it is a calling.”
