Two American missionaries detained in the United Arab Emirates.

United Arab Emirates (MNN)–Two Southern Baptist women are being detained in Dubai, United Arab Emirates for distributing Bibles.

72-year old Vivian Gilmer, of Myrtle Beach, and 55-year old Marie Bush of Waxahachie, Texas, were arrested Feb. 21. They are under house arrest, but are hoping to be deported sometime this week. Attorneys from the International Mission Board and the U.S. Embassy are helping negotiate the women’s return to the United States.

While Christians can practice their faith in their own homes, or churches, it is illegal to proselytize. Since Islam has been declared the official religion of the country, many believers worship on special compounds.

However, the activity in question took place outside those areas. Authorities determined the women were violating the law, so both could stand trial for the charges.

The 11 other missionaries they were with were immediately expelled. Please pray for their safe return home.
