Urban poor in U-S coming to Christ through education.

By January 7, 2004

USA (MNN) — There are more than 575 urban school districts in the United States. 75-percent of the children living in the city attend these school districts. The problem is many of them can’t read, and even more don’t know Christ.

The Association of Christian Schoolsis doing something about it. ACSI’s Doctor Vernard Gant. “We have roughly 430 schools that are members of the organization that identify themselves as urban schools. And, we have been instrumental in helping start up 8 to 10 of those.”

Gant says while education is the primary purpose, it’s not the only purpose. “Many children in our urban centers are unchurched. We’re finding that many of these schools stand in that particular gap as well. We’re not only seeing conversions in the lives of the children, but their parents as well.”

Funding is needed to help with the tuition scholarship program.
