Uganda (MNN) -- Scope of Ugandan poverty hard to fathom

Uganda (MNN) — The Ugandan Parliament has given the government permission to seek out loans for over 162 million USD (sh324 billion) to reduce poverty throughout rural areas of the country, according to AllAfrica News. Around 1.4 million Ugandans would benefit from these loans.

Such a need is not only overwhelming; it is almost impossible to fathom. However, putting names and faces to the need begins to help one grasp that there are so many people living in deep poverty, faced with death daily, in just Uganda alone.

Dr. Max Lange of Childcare Worldwide cannot get the faces of one family out of his head, even a month after he has been back from a visit there.

"I've seen much poverty in the 30 years of the existence of our ministry. But this is one of those stories which really stays with you and really moves you, because it is so, so heartbreaking," Lange said.

The story he speaks of is the story of Florence and her family. The 50-year-old woman cares for five children 14 and under, two of whom are her grandchildren. While Florence tries to provide for her family by washing clothes, it is not enough, and the oldest child is forced to work instead of attend school.

Up to this point, Childcare Worldwide has been able to assist the family with two Survival Paks per month, containing food with the nutrients they need.

However, their situation, like many other Ugandans, is still desperate. The home they have can hardly be called a shack, and with an extreme climate of heavy rains and intense heat, it does not protect them from much.

"I wish I could show pictures of this to our listeners and give them some inclination of what it must be like. But I would like to ask our listeners to step forward and consider sponsoring one of those lovely children," Lange said.

Childcare Worldwide wants to build Florence and her family a new home. Click here to help, whether through the building of their home or sponsoring one of the children. Or, you can sponsor another child through Childcare Worldwide. It costs just $35 per month.

Haiti (MNN) -- Hope4Haiti seeks to give food and education to country at 'extreme risk' of deep poverty

Haiti (MNN) — Out of 148 countries worldwide, Haiti ranks second. This ranking was not for cleanest streets or most beautiful
tourist spot, rather for most impoverished and highest number of people at risk
of starvation.

These statistics came from the newly-established Food Security
Risk Index (FSRI) created by London-based Maplecroft, the risk advisory
business. The index "measures the availability, stability and access to basic
food stocks, as well as the impacts on nutrition and health that result from
food insecurity," according to the American Free Press.

AFP also reports Maplecroft ranked each country based on
their performance in 19 key indicators, which include "imports, exports and
production of cereals, food production per capita, rate of undernourishment per
capita, water resources, GDP per capita and global aid shipments."

While June was National Hunger Awareness month, Bright Hope
International had no intention of ending their efforts in Haiti then. Instead,
through their Hope4Haiti program, they have scheduled a food packaging drive
from October 22 -25.

According to Bright Hope's Web site, Hope4Haiti is "a
holistic program spanning over three to five years to completely transform 17
communities."

Throughout the next few years, Bright Hope plans not only
to help children in these communities fill their stomachs, but also to provide them
with an education and the love of Christ.

The food pack in October will provide 2,550 children with
meals. However, Bright Hope needs over 1,000 volunteers for four days to pack
270,000 meals in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

In addition to the food drive, Bright Hope wants to provide
Hope Packs to these children. The packs include school supplies and a Bible in their
native language, which can also impact their friends and family members.
Currently, Bright Hope needs 5,000 Hope Packs at $30 each.

Finally, in an effort to create self-sustaining communities,
Hope4Haiti will provide jobs for these children's families through a microloan
program. By April 2010, Bright Hope needs $50,000 for this program.

To help in any of these three areas, click here.

Also, pray for the children and their families in these 17
communities, that their physical and spiritual hunger will be met.
