India (MNN) -- Ministry commits to helping survivors of India's 100-year floods

India (MNN) — Last month, the century's worst flooding hit Indian states Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

India Partners raised over $56,000 dollars in relief aid and helped over 20,000 people through local partners.

They hope to raise another $50,000 to assist flood victims and meet ongoing needs such as food and clean water.

"It's going to take months, if maybe not years, for villagers to rebuild their lives,"said Brent Hample with India Partners.

More than 250 people lost their lives, and over 2.5million are homeless due to this recent calamity. An estimated 600 villages were destroyed by the floods, and survivors are in desperate need of food, clean water and shelter.

"As the mosquito population increases now from this standing water," Hample adds, "it's going to increase the incidents of malaria and encephalitis as well."

India Partners helps flood survivors through three local partners in Andhra Pradesh: Orphans Faith Home, Living Sacrifice Ministries, and India Abundant Ministries. Through their relief fund, India Partners accepts donations which help their partners buy food, clean water, blankets, mosquito nets, clothing, medicines and temporary shelter.

"These victims and families which are affected by these floods badly need our support for…their daily needs because they left their houses without taking anything," explained David Samuel of Orphans Faith Home.

As local organizations work with India Partners to provide flood relief, pray that people would come to know Christ through these organizations' acts of mercy. Your gifts to the India Partners Flood Relief Fund can help flood victims rebuild their lives. Click here if you'd like to help.

India (MNN) -- Flooding compounds disaster for an India ministry

India (MNN) — Compassion International says the dam holding
the River Krishna in Andhra Pradesh, India, burst under the torrential rains. The
resulting floods are the worst in a century.

The government announced plans to relocate all 226 villages
that had been located on the banks of the River Krishna, Tungabhdra and Bhima to
safer places. They also said they would
build several lakh houses as a permanent
rehabilitation measure.

Compassion International says
there are four child development centers affected by the disaster. Relief supplies continue to be distributed. Church partners are providing shelter and
food to all affected families.

Government assessment teams are visiting
the flood-ravaged districts
of Kurnool, Mahbubnagar, Krishna and Guntur to figure out their next priority.

Ironically, prior to October, the
region was reeling under severe drought conditions, and the government had
declared several areas as "drought affected" in order to release money from the
Calamity Relief Fund. On October 1, the country was hit by heavy
rains and floods.

Please pray for the children and
families who have been affected by the heavy rain and flooding. Many have lost
their homes and everything they owned. Pray that they will draw near to God as they recover.

India (MNN) -- Monsoon rains trouble Christian projects in India

India (MNN) — Deadly monsoon-driven floods in India's Bihar
state displaced one million people.

The flooding compounds fears of food shortages in the days
ahead. June proved to be the driest in
about 83 years. According to reports on
Relief Web, the rains that did fall were 29 per cent below normal.

Ironically, Bihar faces a double scourge, with floods in
the Northern parts and drought in the Southern areas.

The waters have receded now, and three affected Compassion International child development
centers re-opened.

Food
security, however, is the growing concern.

Since the flooding destroyed crops, many parents of
Compassion-assisted children have no ability to generate income. Church
partners distributed relief supplies to affected families including food, candles and matches, rain coats, plastic sheets, tarps
and medicine.

Compassion-sponsored children have
access to educational opportunities, medical care, nutritious food and
knowledge of the love of God.

Please pray for the children as they
grow and mature. Pray they will be excited to learn at school. Pray also that their
hearts will be softened to learn about God and follow Him. Ask God
to continue providing for their needs.

Thailand (MNN) -- Deadly flooding in Thailand strikes ministry area

Thailand (MNN) — Recent rains
have caused flooding in the high mountain region of central Thailand, where
villagers make their living as rice farmers.
Thailand's southwestern monsoon season typically runs from May through
October. Two years ago, 46 of 76
provinces experienced flooding that claimed 40 lives but displaced thousands.

This time around, dozens of
villages in the region have been affected by flooding after more than a week of
heavy rains caused rivers to burst their banks. A primary damage assessment shows
that paddy fields in Tambon Phrathat Phadaeng have been flooded.

The region’s governor issued a
warning to residents in low-lying areas, foothills, and along riverbanks to
prepare themselves for the flood and to be on the alert to it as more rain is
expected. The governor also instructed
relevant units to expedite aid for the flood-affected.

One of the child
development centers assisted by Compassion International is located in the flooded region. Although the flood
injured nor homes damaged.

Praise God for His protection of

Philippines (MNN) -- Shattered peace in the Philippines shutters a ministry project area

Philippines (MNN) — Brutal
fighting has flared up between Muslim separatists and military groups in
Mindanao.

Peace was within the grasp of the
country until a proposed peace treaty between the Philippines and the Moro
Islamic Liberation Front collapsed.

That triggered the worst violence
in a decade in Mindanao. The
cancellation of an August 5 signing ceremony came after the Philippines Supreme
Court ruled on a challenge from the Christian population.

Mindanao Christians fear the
peace deal creates a Muslim state, which could worsen sectarian
violence. They believe the deal was
unconstitutional and they would lose the protection of their rights as Filipinos.

As the deal failed, the rebels
launched a series of attacks, killing over 30 civilians. The government responded with air strikes, adding
to a death toll the government estimates at 120,000 during the past 40 years.

The fighting has displaced as many
as 150,000 people, and there are 11 child development
centers assisted by Compassion International which have felt the impact.

One of Compassion's projects has stopped
regular project activities until peace can be restored in the area. The children and their families from this
project are currently staying at evacuation centers set up at local schools.

Pray for the safety of the families and
the staff. Ask God to bring resolution between the fighting groups and
to restore peace to the area. Pray
for discernment as Compassion-Philippines looks to partner with new churches in
Marawi, Zamboanga and Sibugay.

Pray for the
government to rule wisely, fairly and compassionately. Pray also for the country to
enjoy renewed stability. And, pray for Filipino children whose parents must leave the country to find work.

India (MNN) -- One million cut off by monsoon floods in India

India (MNN) — Northern India's
monsoon flooding has stranded one million people. Many roads are washed away, and railway lines are impassable.

Tens of thousands have fled into
Nepal for relief. It will take days
before the floodwaters recede enough to reach survivors with aid supplies.

Floods do occasionally disrupt ministry. However, the people
accept the situation matter-of-factly, says JP
SundarRajan representing Audio Scripture Ministries. "We try to meet their
needs, but the challenges we face every year are the same. When there is flooding, we cannot get out to
the field, so we kind of have to wait for the government to come in and do what it has to do to make the
roads accessible again and things like that."

Although several of their
serviced areas were battling heavy rains, as opposed to floods, there were concerns
for the headquarters of partner World Cassette Outreach in Bangalore. The nearly-century-old building is no longer
adequate, and the team is raising funds to construct a new building.

While the headquarters usually
faces high waters, SundarRajan says this time the pumps managed to keep up
with the rains, and the building wasn't flooded. This is good news, considering the water damages they've
already sustained.

The team expects the calls for audio resources to
start coming in soon. Calls to the
India office are typically not for aid. Many
are from churches or church planters who want to replace resources lost in the
floods.

SundarRajan says this is
reflective of something greater. "When there is adversity of any sort, people then turn to us and
want us to provide them audio Scriptures.
We just don't have the resources to meet the needs of all of the people.
We really would like to provide more of the spiritual nourishment that people
are seeking, and we just don't seem to have the resources."

Pray that
God would touch those who can financially support the project, allowing the
building to begin soon. Praise God for the good beginning (one third is
raised). Pray that the remaining funds would be raised as well.

Mexico (MNN) -- Heavy flooding in Mexico a temporary disruption

Mexico (MNN) — A tropical wave
struck southern Mexico while an active monsoon season keeps north
underwater. Rainfall has been over 50%
above average for the season.

To the southeast, the heavy rains
temporarily affected three of Compassion
International's child development centers. Most of the affected families have
returned home with just a few remaining with relatives or neighbors until their
homes can be strengthened.

Compassion Mexico's team is
acting as the hands and feet of Christ by distributing aid. Their response has been ongoing since last
month.

Tropical depression Arthur was
the first storm that made landfall in June. Since then, powerful rains have hit
Chiapas, Veracruz, Tabasco and Oaxaca.

One Compassion child development
center in the Juchitan area was used as shelter, along with two schools. At least ten child development centers were affected
by the rains, though there is no report of serious injury.

Even though this crisis has
passed, there are concerns for the immediate future. Short-term forecasts are calling for more rains,
especially in the south and the northwest.

The long-term outlook is calling for an
above-average tropical season. Tropical storms are the main and most
destructive source of flooding, and a severe tropical season could result in
catastrophic floods in Mexico.

Praise God for protecting all
Compassion-assisted children and their families during the heavy rains. Please pray for those who have to rebuild
homes, and pray that crops will be unharmed.

USA (MNN) — 35 counties in the
state of Arkansas have been declared federal disasters in the wake of massive
flooding. For these residents, it's the
second natural disaster in a matter of months.

A CityTeam Disaster Response crew is in Baxter
County at the flood zone, helping families survive this devastating disaster. The ministry is aiming at raising $100,000 to
aid in the restoration of damaged homes in Baxter County.

Teams are operating out of a
ministry base that's been set up in Norfork, AR. They're working on the cleanup of 11 homes
that were severely damaged by the flood waters.

In the midst of this disaster,
CityTeam members have been blessed with multiple opportunities to minister to
the survivors through prayer and by meeting their felt needs.

CityTeam is still in need of
portable generators, industrial power washers, brooms, shovels, bleach,
protective gear, masks, and gloves.

They're also recruiting teams to
act as the hands and feet of Christ among the community in the clean-up effort.
The next group of volunteers is scheduled to arrive on May 10, 2008 to continue
the clean-up effort. They're also rounding up volunteers for the week of May 17-24.

Please continue to pray for the
volunteer teams and the families they are serving.

in temporary shelters in the wake of a rainy season that has pummeled the
country since January. This is
considered the worst flooding in 25 years, with damage estimates at a billion
dollars.

"The access to the land is gone. The businesses are
down and destroyed by the water. There's no income. There's no food," says Christian Reformed World Relief
Committee's Jacob Kramer, summing up the crisis.

The stagnant water and contaminated wells are leading to
outbreaks of waterborne diseases. On top
of that, the education system has been
severely disrupted with nearly 20 percent of the schools damaged or partially
destroyed.

Although the rains may be slowing, it will likely be next
month before the floodwaters recede enough to begin rebuilding.

CRWRC, with its partner Rowan, has begun its response to the
situation in Ecuador by distributing mosquito nets and food aid to families in
12 remote communities in the Manabí province and two communities in the Guayas
province.

Their commitment speaks volumes. Kramer says, "The aid we are providing
is through the churches, and as such, we are empowering the local churches to
reach out beyond their membership in order to be the hands and feet of
Christ. That is really an empowerment of
mission of the local churches, and we see the Spirit greatly moving in that
area."

Bolivia (MNN) -- A ministry fashions growth out of Bolivia's flood devastation

Bolivia (MNN) — The annual flooding in Bolivia is expected
to continue through April. So far, four
months of high waters have killed over 70 people and affected 94,000 families. It's the worst flooding the
country has experienced in a quarter century.

According to the United Nations, an
appeal for more than $18 million to provide relief has not yet been met. Thousands of families remain in makeshift
shelters in 51 camps in either Beni or Santa Cruz department.

By their count, 400,000 Bolivians are
in need of urgent assistance in the wake of deadly floods, mudslides and
landslides.

Because relief efforts have
been seriously underfunded, people have been left to their own devices in
getting aid to the survivors. Grace
Ministries International's Sam Vinton says their Santa Cruz church plant
responded. "The church got together
and took food and supplies, clothing, blankets and so on to one of these
settlements that had been flooded out and 70 families had to evacuate."

From this, Vinton says God shaped a new ministry. "One of the times that they went out
there, they had an evangelistic service, and 20 adults and quite a number of
children made professions of faith. Now, the congregation that has been doing this outreach bought land, and
they're starting to plant a church in that village using the nucleus of those
20 people that have come to the Lord."

GMI missionaries are working with the national church organization
in the areas of evangelism, church planting, youth, and leadership training.
Ministries to the youth are being provided through three schools (K-12) where
1,800 students are receiving Christian-based education. A year-round camp and
AWANA programs in the churches enhance the ministry with the youth.
