Many churches are still adjusting to an increasingly digital existence as church services are posted online. Other ministries have already embraced an online presence that is helping connect church members to new resources.

Sammy Tippit from Sammy Tippit Ministries says that they have witnessed amazing growth and revival through online spaces. Fortunately, Sammy Tippit Ministries evangelical programs and resources were created to be easily found online.

Recently, over 300,000 people watched a conference from Brazil hosted online by Sammy Tippit Ministries. The ministry is in the process of planning and hosting more online conferences for churches worldwide.

“I really feel like the Lord is wanting to do something and … send a revival. And we’re already seeing it happen,” Tippit says.

Churches Adjust to Digital Platforms

But not every church or ministry developed such a robust digital presence, and many are struggling to adjust.

Tippit explains that many churches had some presence online but nothing they had fully developed.

“I think we can take this whole digital thing and come up with a strategy that will enhance our physically getting together. We can go deeper, we can provide things that will help people to grow in their faith.” Tippit says.

Creating a digital strategy will benefit churches for years if they mesh in-person gatherings with online resources. “I’m hoping that out of [COVID-19] that churches will begin to look at the whole digital world in a little bit of a different way,” Tippit adds.

The Body of Christ Online

Social distancing leaves many churches separated physically, but digital spaces are giving church members the opportunity to connect socially.

Tippit says, “God has blessed us in this generation at this particular moment in history. We have the ability to be apart physically but still interact socially.”

“We have an opportunity in a different form to… really interact on a different basis.”

Small groups typically revolve around local communities and churches, but technology is opening a window of connection.

Fellowship Through Technology

The program is based on Whatsapp, a free messaging, video, and voice application. Sammy Tippit Ministries provides daily videos, resources and training for small-group leaders to share. It’s up to the group leader to form and operate the group.

“We’re not providing the technology but we’re taking already existing technology and taking small groups and saying ‘form those groups where you can actually communicate on a daily basis,’” said Founder Sammy Tippit.

He doesn’t see these virtual groups as replacements for in-person small groups. The groups are intended for believers who are separated by distance to supplement traditional weekly in-person gatherings.

Believers Beyond Boarders

“This enables us to cross borders. It enables us to cross language barriers. And so the barriers that keep us from helping others to grow in Christ are broken down through…incorporating technology into the whole small group concept,” Tippit says.

An app can connect believers in different countries, states, and continents for weekly or daily fellowship. Even with language barriers, modern translation software can help support communication.

Currently, a group of believers in China who are unable to meet physically are using these resources to meet weekly for devotions and prayer.

Enhancing Local Connections

For those looking to support a local small group, the app can help maintain daily fellowship. Tippit encourages users to form a small group at their local churches. He plans to offer leadership training in addition to daily resources. These can support weekly in-person fellowship.

“Take technology, add that technology to those human small groups, and enable a more effective discipleship,” he says.

The project signup and kick off in mid-January is quickly approaching. Believers interested in starting their own groups or supplementing existing ones can find out more via Facebook where devotions are available every day and on the ministry website.

Tippit says this past decade opened up opportunities for ministry in a way he never imagined possible. Technology has given ministries the ability to cross borders and enter countries in some unexpected ways. Social media and other communication tools have connected people near and far, enabling the building of relationships that would have otherwise never happened.

“As a result of that, ministry, especially evangelism and discipleship, is able to be done in creative ways, more effective ways, and we’re able to reach more people with the Gospel. One of the exciting things is that it can be done at a very, very low cost, and so this has just opened up a whole new world of mission opportunities,” Tippit says.

Technology in Ministry

Technology connects Tippit with people where no Christians live and provides him the tools to share Christ. Five years ago, Tippit used Skype to mentor a young pastor in India. When the pastor started a church, he enlisted Tippit to help with discipling new believers.

“I actually had the ability to disciple people from here in the United States using that simple technology,” Tippit says.

“Well, that has developed, and other technologies have come up since that time. Even…Facebook, it’s opened doors to other technologies like WhatsApp that have enabled not only a broader way of ministering to people but a deeper way of ministering to people.”

Tippit notes all ministry is rooted in communication and relationships. Technology enabling people to communicate has also helped them build robust relationships, too. These relationships have expanded and grown the global Church.

Church Planting and Small Groups

Sammy Tippit Ministries has planted several churches over the last ten years, including churches in countries Tippit has not visited. Relationships, built through multiple technological mediums, led to collaborations, friendships, and partnerships. Tippit applied opportunities for evangelistic events where few Christians live. Then, a local church planter disciples new believers and eventually forms a small church.

“We’ve done this in numerous places. That was unthinkable ten years ago,” Tippit comments.

With hours left until the start of a new year, Sammy Tippit Ministries is looking toward 2020 with hope and ambition. Tippit emphasizes technology can “only assist human relationships; it never replaces human relationships.”

For example, Sammy Tippit Ministries uses technology to assist in relationship building and connecting people through small groups. The ministry is developing and resourcing small groups connected via technology, like WhatsApp or even text messaging. This means a person in the United States can join a small group with someone in Brazil. These small groups will launch at the beginning of 2020.

God at Work in Brazil

Sammy Tippit, founder and president of the international evangelistic organization Sammy Tippit Ministries, recently spoke at a Multiplying Church Movement event in Brazil. He spoke to about 1200 pastors from all over about a program for equipping small groups to disciple new believers.

Tippit says, “There’s a great revival taking place in these churches that are involved in this movement. We shared with them the possibility of teaming together for May 2020 through small group discipleship and training people to share the Gospel with their family and friends, with a large evangelistic outreach at the close of that.”

What is May 2020?

Tippit explains that May 2020 is a month-long outreach and discipleship program. It will include a series of discipleship materials and devotions focused on sharing Christ with family and close friends. Sammy Tippit Ministries will offer these devotions throughout the month of May.

At the end of the month, there will be a large outreach event in Brazil. The event will be broadcast online and translated for participants in the program around the world.

Tippit explains, “The emphasis is going to be on the family. It’s 31 days of praying for your family and reaching out to your family and sharing Christ with your family and your close friends. So what we’re doing is in the circle of people that you have contact [with], we’re starting with those people that are the closest to you and [teaching] how to share Christ with them.”

Discipleship on WhatsApp

Sammy Tippit Ministries is setting up the materials specifically for small group study and discussion. They hope to see devotions like those currently on WhatsApp in Brazil used for small group studies. They are even planning to help connect Facebook followers with one another on WhatsApp to foster small group discipleship.

“The Brazilians already have this. They have WhatsApp groups in these churches, thousands and thousands of them, small groups that are discipleship based.” Tippit says. “And we will be providing them materials in those small groups to use to help them to disciple people to grow in their faith and then multiply that by sharing their faith with others.”

In addition to natural follow-up , Sammy Tippit Ministries is offering three weeks of discipleship message for new believers. They are also helping connect new believers to small groups on WhatsApp.

Get Involved

God is opening doors for additional partnerships and even for message translation into other languages. The work is happening, but Tippit asks for prayer. Pray every message would reach people with open hearts and that the Gospel would not be hindered.

Tippit also asks for prayer for the logistics of producing the materials, spreading materials, and helping people find small groups.

He says, “Pray, first of all, that we will be able to seamlessly move people from social media into small groups. We have tens of thousands of followers in the various languages that I’m talking about, all over the world, watching our Facebook materials. We want to move them from just watching videos, Christian videos on Facebook, to being true disciples of Jesus.

“So pray that we would be able to, and we’ll be launching that in January, pray that we’ll be able to make that happen. That we’ll be able to, through the technology, be able to move them from watching a video to becoming a true disciple of Jesus in a small group context.”

Sammy Tippit in Brazil

Evangelist Sammy Tippit of Sammy Tippit Ministries says discipleship materials on sharing one’s faith are in the works for May 2020. These materials will include daily resources for a span of 28 days. The goal is to equip churches to disciple believers who have prayed for their families so they can move into the act of sharing their faith.

“They have thousands of churches involved in this. They’re going through YouTube, to live broadcast and stream this into all the churches, and all the churches will participate in an evangelistic event,” Tippit says.

After the 28 days it takes to complete the program, the Multiplying Church Movement will hold a 3-day evangelistic outreach. They have already asked Tippit to preach at the event.

But the May 2020 event sparked another idea.

“When we talked about that and agreed upon it, I said, ‘You know, this could be done worldwide. It doesn’t have to be done just in Brazil.’ So, what we’re going to do is we’re going to do the same thing with other languages,” Tippit says.

Sparks for a Global Movement

Sammy Tippit Ministries is already engaging with work in other languages across the world. Since 2017, the ministry has used social media sites to connect believers to resources. Just this year, the organization started utilizing technology such as WhatsApp to equip and connect believers in various countries. Now, technology could help connect and resources these same believers even more effectively.

“We’ll have this outreach, and we’ll use different methods for different nations. For instance, in Iran, we will use TV, because that’s the easiest way for us to deliver it. And other countries, India, Pakistan, places like that we’ll use WhatsApp to deliver this,” Tippit says.

At the end of this month, Tippit will launch the plan to start translating discipleship materials into different languages . These materials can be used in small groups and are beneficial for teaching believers how to multiply their faith.

Next Steps

Tippit says the translation work itself is costly; the ministry is going to need support. Sammy Tippit Ministries is already looking at translating discipleship material into Hindi, Farsi, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, and more.

“But at the very top [of the webpage] you’ll see a little banner or a little box that says ‘view daily discipleship videos’. Every day, there is a brand-new devotion that will help a person to grow in Christ. And when you click on that…everyday it will come up new. It not only has a video devotion, but it has a text devotion. It has a scripture passage that goes with that, that will help people to really have a time alone with God,” Tippit says.

The daily discipleship and devotional videos are broken into four sections, each lasting 13 weeks. These sections include prayer, sharing your faith, how to grow in Christ, and family life.

Multiply Disciples Across the Map

Another goal of Sammy Tippit Ministries is to help multiply disciples through the resources it offers. To accomplish this, the ministry has 11 different Facebook pages. Each page is specific to a different language.

Tippit says Christians can use these previously mentioned devotional videos cross-culturally, too. For example, if a person travels internationally, he or she can share the ministry’s translated videos and resources with those he or she meets, then disciple those people even after returning home.

“Right now, [we’re] in the process of trying to help people. We have tens of thousands of followers, and all these languages that are following those pages. And we’re trying now to move them into small group discipleship groups, through communication tools like WhatsApp, and which is really exciting,” Tippit says.

Take Action Through Prayer

This ministry is on the verge of launching its largest outreach yet. Ask God to protect this ministry and resource it for His work. Evangelist Sammy Tippit is beaming Christian television programming via satellite into Iran. He says it's needed more now than ever. "Many times the believers are not able to get together; it's too dangerous. So, many of the believers–because of what's happening with arrests and various things–have started basically getting their [spiritual] food from the television."

Tippit's program airs today in Iran. He says it's critically import because many of these people are new Christians. "They don't have a lot of knowledge of Scripture, so they really need some guidance at this point in time. And we're trying to help them with that."

Tippit is helping, despite being declared an enemy of the state. "Because of our broadcasts, an article came out stating that I was an enemy of the state, which means I can't get in. But I can get in digitally."

That's about the only way to get training to these new believers, says Tippit. "Many of them are suffering. They're being arrested. They're being rounded up. As the political tensions escalate, spiritual tensions are escalating at the same time, and we need to be praying for the believers."

While Christians are facing more persecution, Tippit says that's actually helping the church. "That produces spiritual growth as well, and so there's somewhat of a deepening as well as a broadening. I would say probably the broadening of the church isn't quite so rampant, but the deepening is much more rampant."

While funding is always needed for the broadcasts, Tippit is asking for prayer. "We need prayer for wisdom. We need prayer for the broadcasts going in, and that believers would have grace, strength and wisdom to do the will of God."

The American evangelist says he doesn't remember his father ever talking about his grandparents. In searching out his roots, "I discovered a rich heritage that I [didn't know about]. And when I discovered it, one of the moving things I found was that my grandmother — whom I had never met because she died before I was born — was a godly, praying woman."

The only thing written about her was her prayer life. Tippit says she prayed that her lost son would come to Christ. "God answered her prayers through a grandson [me] whom she never met and whom she never got to know, to bring her son back to the Lord."

Tippit's father was saved on his deathbed. He says that led him to write the book, "Praying For Your Family: An Eternal Legacy."

"The very first part of the book is: what do you do when you pray? I mean, a lot of people don't know what to do. And then, how do you pray for your family? What are the obstacles? What keeps you from doing that? I believe it will help our listeners and see God do a work in our families."

According to Tippit, "If God were to touch their families and people were to come to Christ inside our families, there would be an evangelism explosion. We could turn this country around if we would just reach our own families."

While the book started off as an effort to help the North American church, it has now grown. "I started having [Christians from other countries] say, 'Can we have it over here? Can we have it in our country? We need this so desperately.' I found that there is a crisis that is happening around the world in families and homes. So, the book has now been translated into numerous languages."

In July, Tippit will be heading to Brazil not only to lead evangelistic meetings, but also to lead a conference on Praying For Your Family.

While the prayers of Tippit's grandmother were answered, God has done exceedingly and abundantly above what she could ask or think because her grandson is being used to share Christ in the Middle East, Asia, South America, Africa and Europe. Evangelist Sammy Tippit works with the Iranian church. He says he's not surprised by the unrest. "I fully anticipated that this would happen because there is a such a deep longing in the hearts of the Iranian people for freedom."

That desire for freedom has been brought on by years of hard-line Islamic rule. Tippit says the Ayatollah Khomeini was positive for evangelism. "He showed the people what Islam really is, and the people have rejected it. I remember going into Iran for the first time, and people would walk by some of the clerics and they would literally spit on the ground because they so despised them. People have been turned off in multitudes. "

Tippit says people are turning to Christ in miraculous ways in Iran. "In Iran, God is just coming and visiting people in dreams and visions. I mean, every week this is happening. We're hearing more and more people who are having this take place in their lives and are becoming believers, followers of Jesus."

The latest person who had contacted him to let him know she came to Christ had no connection to Christians.

Tippit says, "There is a spiritual dimension that is growing out of a hunger in people's hearts to know who God really is, and it's just something that's very, very unique."

It's not a revival. Rather, "This is a general awakening in the secular community," says Tippit. "God is awakening hearts to who Christ is, and people are believing in Him, and it's happening in an unusual manner."

Tippit has been deemed an enemy of the state because of his work in Iran. Unfortunately, because of security issues, he can't tell us what he's doing there, but he needs your support. "When you talk about Iran and ministering inside Iran, we'd better pray. This is not by the power of the human flesh this is going to be done; this is going to be done in the power of the Holy Spirit."

Tippit says if revolution takes place, he expects a great wave of people turning to Christ.

This new peace is allowing for an historic event to take place this weekend.

American Evangelist Sammy Tippit says, "The people of Southern Sudan have been just devastated by the Islamic government of the north. So freedom has come, to some extent. And for the first time in many, many years, they're going to be able to hold a very large outdoor evangelistic meeting."

We met up with Tippit in the airport on his way to the event where he'll be the key note speaker. He was invited by believers he worked with when he held evangelistic meetings in the north. "They were displaced at that time — away from their home — and now they've come back. And that's how I got invited. And so they're prepared because they know exactly what needs to be done to do the follow up."

Tippit believes the people are Southern Sudan are uniquely ready for the Gospel."When I go into an area that's been torn apart, the people are ready; they're open; they're hungry for the good news of the Gospel. So it'll be interesting to see."

The meetings that will be held through the weekend are being supported by all of the churches in the region.

Tippit is asking you to pray. "Pray that many, many people will come to a personal knowledge of Jesus Christ. We believe this is the greatest need in the country. As hearts are transformed, it will transform the people. It will transform the nation."
