Cuba (MNN) -- Approval sought for Bible distribution in Cuba

Cuba (MNN) — In Romans 10, we read the apostle Paul's question: "How, then, can they call on the One they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? How can they preach unless they are sent?"

Those are all great questions. How about adding one more, "How can they understand the One if they don't have His Word?"

WorldServe Ministries is trying to change that in the countries in which they're working through a two-year campaign. WorldServe's Ken Leggatt describes the campaign. "The Million Bible Change is a two-year goal for WorldServe Ministries in Canada. We're aiming at delivering one million Bibles in the hands of believers around the world in that period of time."

Leggatt says they'll be sending Bibles to China, Cuba, Ethiopia, Vietnam, India and Iran.

WorldServe just got some good news out of Cuba. "We're working with the Bible Commission in that country and asking them for permission. It's been several months in the works, but we finally received permission to deliver an initial shipment of up to 5,000 Bibles."

While Bibles have already been sent into Cuba, Leggatt says the need is still great in this nation of 11 million. "There are 56 denominations, and all of those denominations are seeing growth. What this is basically doing is creating a need every year for Bibles. Many people have grown up in this communist country, and they haven't had sufficient access to Bibles."

According to Leggatt, it only costs $5 to put a Bible in the hands of a Cuban believer. "It'll allow the believers in those churches to grow in their faith with a solid foundation. And that will allow the next wave of people who've grown up in the Bible now, raised as new Christians in the Word of God, to be equipped to share the Word well with their friends."

China (MNN) -- Believers banned from Lausanne by government have optimistic outlook

China (MNN) — Last week, multiple members of various churches in China were stopped by the government from leaving the country. A number of those planning to attend the Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization in South Africa, Cape Town 2010, were stopped at their airport or even their homes.

Lausanne 2010 presents an opportunity for church leaders in over 200 nations to come together to encourage the persecuted church and unite in evangelistic efforts. Many are outraged that the delegates of China–a country where church growth seems to be exploding as of late–were unreasonably detained. (Read the story here.) Tom Henry with WorldServe Ministries points out that something like this seems to happen every time China starts opening up to the Gospel.

As often appears to be the case with the persecuted church, however, the victims have a slightly different perspective than the onlookers. While believers around the world have been rightfully thrown off by the injustice of the situation, many Chinese believers have an optimistic attitude about it.

"The one thing I have learned about the Chinese is that they totally embrace and follow a God that's all powerful, that's Sovereign, that's loving," says Henry. "And they yield these [situations] into His hands so that they have really learned, as Paul said, contentment in all things."

Henry says the church in China has come up against fire for spreading the Gospel many times in the past, so the government's actions to keep church leaders from an evangelism conference did not come as a surprise. Those who were planning to attend, however, were looking forward to Lausanne, which would have been a good opportunity for leaders to network. "Because of the nature in the church in China, there's not as much networking as there [is] in other countries where there's more of an open environment," explains Henry.

Still, the church in China is fervently holding out hope that God will open even bigger doors as a result of this apparent setback. Henry notes, "They really have seen God take things like this that are humanly disappointing and use them to really expand the church in China."

In the meantime, kingdom work will go on as usual across the People's Republic of China. Henry says that WorldServe continues to work with Chinese believers who are training up North Korean believers and sending them back to their country. Pray that their work would continue to bring the Gospel to the unreached, and pray that God would indeed use the particular situation at hand to make His name known to even more throughout China.

International (MNN) -- Bibles and tour will help WorldServe Ministries celebrate 35 years of ministry

International (MNN)– WorldServe Ministries is celebrating their 35th anniversary with a focus on God's Word. WorldServe's Ken Leggatt says the ministry started in Canada to translate Scripture into 100 different languages.

WorldServe is highlighting those roots. "In celebration of our 35th anniversary, we have a goal to distribute 1 million Bibles around the world. It's about a 20-month campaign that we'll be running, and we're looking at distributing Bibles to China, Ethiopia, India, Vietnam, Cuba and also Iran."

Leggatt says it'll be a 20 month campaign. He says $5 can send a Bible to one of these countries.

While Bibles have been translated for all of these nations, "their availability is low. There is a need for them so people can grow in their faith. There's even cases of people pastoring a church when they only read the Gospel of John," Leggatt adds.

Scripture is at the core of WorldServe is about, says Leggatt, but that's not all. "Also, supporting indigenous church planting efforts and different humanitarian efforts."

In North America, they're celebrating with the Truth Matters Campaign. "It's talking about the relevance of God's Word in our lives today and the authority that it has," says Leggatt.

Truth Matters will feature 10 stops to highlight the need for Bible reading. "Statistically less than 75% of Christians are reading the Bible daily or even weekly. We're not impoverished from having the physical message but reading it and apply it to their lives. We want to challenge our brothers and sisters in North America to go deeper," Leggatt says.

Ethiopia (MNN) -- Church roofs a way to bring people to Christ?

Ethiopia (MNN) — Ethiopians are turning away from Islam, orthodoxy, and witchcraft as they watch the Christians around them whose lives are filled with purpose. As a result, churches are popping up everywhere.

"People see the living God in the lives of Christians, and they realize that their faith is empty," explains Ken Leggatt of WorldServe Ministries. "They're looking for hope and purpose, and the Christian missionaries that are working in these countries are sharing the hope in Christ. People are accepting that and coming to know Christ as their Savior."

As new believers continue to be born, small church bodies are coming to life throughout the country. These Christians not only stand as a strong force for the Gospel but also as a challenge to traditional beliefs in witchcraft–a testimony which helps to get Ethiopians asking questions. Unfortunately, these churches seldom have the resources to build a place of worship.

In one instance, a body of believers began to gather under a tree. The small group grew so quickly that there were soon 60 new Christians meeting. The church outgrew the space underneath the tree and decided to build, but they didn't have the funding to pay for a roof. Without a roof, the building was incomplete.

Recognizing needs of churches like this, WorldServe has embarked on a mission to provide roofs for 100 churches throughout Ethiopia. This way, church buildings can be completed, and more lives can be changed for Christ.

"The new building helps the church so that people can come and attend the worship service properly. But more importantly, it helps the people in the community [by providing] a sign of the defeat of the witch doctors and the victory of the Gospel," says Leggatt. "Every day, people are coming to the church and coming to know Christ."

In order to provide for this worthwhile mission, WorldServe has a goal of raising $120,000. One sheet of metal for a roof costs $12, and it takes about 100 sheets to build a full roof. With $120,000 WorldServe could provide roofs for all 100 churches.

The church in Ethiopia is growing; they just need buildings. If you would like to help by sending even $12 for a sheet of metal to help these churches stand in defiance of witchcraft and as a witness for Christ, call WorldServe at 1-800-414-7788. You can also check their Web site for other contact information.

Cuba (MNN) -- Through children's ministry, churches impact communities and futures

Cuba (MNN) — Though many restrictions have been lifted for
Cubans, and they have more freedoms (religious and otherwise) than in past
years, the government still places limitations on Christians. However, this has
not stopped the church from growing and thriving in the past 15 to 20 years,
according to John Dyck, WorldServe Ministries field director for Cuba.

For example, the Cuban government will not allow the construction
of new church buildings. Christians, therefore, meet in house churches. And though Dyck
said no more than 15 people are legally allowed to meet together for house
church, he has seen as many as 200 people packed into a house to worship.

As the church booms, lack of funds and proper training limit
them from doing all they want to do. WorldServe steps in to fill in the
gaps and empower church workers: "Driving what WorldServe specifically
does in Cuba is the fact that we believe that it should be Cubans who are
reaching other Cubans for Jesus Christ," Dyck said.

Dyck calls WorldServe a "contact point," as they connect
North American ministries with the work already taking place in Cuba. This partnership
enables the Cuban church to have the maximum impact, as well as allows North
American ministries to help where needed most.

One specific partner is Christian Camping International, which
is "an
alliance of 18 associations whose leaders serve the Christian camping movement
and impact 12 million campers each year," according to their Web site.

WorldServe partners with them in children's ministry. Dyck said Cubans
place a high value on children's ministry: "The Cuban
churches already are very tuned in to the fact that children's ministry is a
great window of opportunity to reach homes which otherwise may not be
reached."

When working with children, not only are workers sharing
Christ in creative ways, they are also altering the future of communities throughout
Cuba, as children bring what they learn back to their parents. With each child's
decisions for Christ, their life outlook changes, which will influence his or
her career and social choices in the future.

But these excited kids are not the only ones turning to
Christ: "The conversions that they are seeing among children are huge,"
Dyck said. "But even more than that, … there's a hunger among the parents to
find something that works for their family."

At one children's outreach organized by a WorldServe
Canadian partner, Dyck said around 150 kids showed up, as well as 80 parents.

You can help WorldServe in one of three ways as they empower the kids, families
and communities of Cuba. First, you can donate to
provide the funds and training needed for church workers and planters by
visiting worldserve.org. You can also help their partners, Christian Camping
International, at their Web site.

Secondly, you can pray for the work taking place in Cuba. Pray
for believers to spread Christ's love freely, regardless of the restrictions
placed on them.

Finally, though Americans are restricted from Cuba, if you
are from Canada or elsewhere, you can visit Cuba and see the incredible work
taking place there.

China (MNN) -- WorldServe says thousands have turned to Christ after deadly quake

China (MNN) — Today marks the second anniversary of one of the worst disasters in recent history: the Sichuan earthquake. While the official death toll is just shy of 69,000, reports say there are still nearly 18,000 people recorded as missing.

Brian Rushton, Vice President of Partner Relations for WorldServe Ministries, says they were supporting Chinese believers humanitarian efforts within days of the quake. "1,500 people responded to come and help right in the area immediately. Of that, we were able to continue funding 400 of them for the next year."

According to Rushton, the commitment of Chinese believers in the region made an incredible difference physically and spiritually. "The first year, 15,000 people came to Christ. The second year, we've seen another 10,000 come to Jesus Christ. But that's only because we had people on the ground who were willing to go alongside and bring resources, sit and talk with the people, hear their story, and then share with them the hope of Christ."

Because of the number of new Christians, Rushton says churches have been planted. "Over 430 churches have been established. And they continue to grow. Those churches are caring for the people, helping them not only build homes but also find business opportunities."

Rushton says as these churches are established and discipleship is taking place, they're beginning to see community transformation. While there are many orphaned children, there are also many seniors facing a similar situation. "Some of the seniors lost their whole social network because their family was killed off. So, who is going to care for these orphaned seniors? The church needs to pick up that responsibility."

Christians who are working in the region need prayer desperately. "They see so much pain still. There's a process of growing weary in that. Pray that they will not grow weary in ministering, because there's still so much devastation."

WorldServe continues to help the national church there. If you'd like to help, click here.

China (MNN) -- WorldServe Ministries says many may turn to Christ as quake relief pours in

China (MNN) — A major earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale devastated China's Yushu County in the Qinghai Province on April 14. Thousands are homeless. The region is reeling from the devastation. WorldServe Ministries relief efforts are in high gear.

Brian Rushton with WorldServe Ministries says the death toll from the quake has been revised. "They first thought it was going to be around 2,000, and now it's up to 4000 who are dead."

Many are still missing as 90-percent of the buildings in this predominately-Tibetan region were destroyed. Rushton says, "We had 20 house churches in the area, and they were all demolished. Luckily, none of the people who were in those houses were killed."

While the church buildings have been destroyed, Rushton says the church itself is doing great work. "The Christian community has come together, and even people who didn't know that others were Christians. This is all coming to light now as they work together and care for one another. So, the love of Christ has been shown incredibly right now."

WorldServe comes alongside the church in China to help with the earthquake victims. They have experience because they assisted in the Sichuan earthquake last year. Rushton is hoping for a great move of God. "In one year, we saw 15,000 people come to Jesus Christ. So, we anticipate that same thing."

He says when Christians help in difficult circumstances, many times God opens huge doors for outreach. "It's when you're really down and out that you're most open to change," Rushton adds.

WorldServe is delivering emergency relief supplies to the region, and you can help. He says, "About $9,000 gets another full truckload of supplies right to the earthquake area."

The need is great. "We could easily send another 10 truckloads without any trouble at all," says Rushton. And your financial support can help them do that. The funding will empower the local church to do even more to meet physical and spiritual needs.

Ethiopia (MNN) -- WorldServe Ministries opens new training center in Ethiopia

Ethiopia (MNN) — Reaching the lost in Ethiopia is the task at hand for WorldServe Ministries. Ethiopia has been plagued with food shortages, famine and rocked by the global economic crisis.

However, WorldServe is committed to training Christians at their new Woroncha (war-AHN-chah) Training Center in Southeast Ethiopia, says Ken Leggatt. "That training center will be equipping pastors and evangelists to reach the unreached and hard-to-reach people groups in that part of the country." In this case, they're going to be trained to reach the Muslim population of the country.

The training center opened late last month with 20 students.

Leggatt says since the region is predominately Muslim, "It's been fairly antagonistic when they go into some of these, what I'll call, restricted access communities. But, often times we've seen where there's been tremendous successes where the spirit of God is literally paving the way."

Leggatt says in some cases, visions of Christ have prepared villagers to receive their Christian guests. "Workers in the field were breaking rocks where they would see Jesus written in the rock. They would think it was odd and forget about it. Then, it would happen again. A few days later a church planter showed up, then miraculously people would be receptive to the Gospel."

Sponsoring a student will help the program grow. "Right now our sponsorship program is $100 a month. It goes toward living expenses, training and travel expenses, and many don't have the resources to get to the school. It's not just tuition."

China (MNN) -- The Church is growing, thanks in part to the Chinese government

China (MNN) — The Church in urban China is growing like wildfire, and it may have the government to thank for it.

"There's a mass migration happening in China right now between people, particularly young people, moving from the rural areas to the city to look for jobs," explains Tom Henry with WorldServe Ministries. "It's also being heavily pushed by the Chinese government. And as that has happens, God is doing the same sort of revival that He did in the rural areas, and churches are exploding in urban areas all over China."

Due to this mass migration, WorldServe has had to alter their direction in China. The ministry, which has historically worked in mostly rural areas of the country, is now moving into the city.

"We're focusing on training new leaders, both business and for the church, and supporting church pastors specifically as they get started on urban churches," says Henry. "We're also reaching unreached people groups that move into the city."

Again comes in the support of the Chinese government. Not only do urban areas of China tend to include less persecution than rural areas, but the government has granted WorldServe and many churches permission to do their work. This allows WorldServe to train Christian businessmen and pastors unhindered.

WorldServe's most recent shift has been in training businessmen. The ministry often brings reputable Christian business leaders from the U.S. and Canada to help train.

"We're really encouraging people to use business as a platform as God intended, because it can be a great opportunity to impact the culture," says Henry.

Eventually, WorldServe hopes to do enough training to essentially not be needed anymore.

"Our goal is to work ourselves out of support for church planting and even training, and have the Chinese businessmen support their own country," explains Henry. By this time the church in China will be thriving on its own–an ideal that could not occur without the support of the Chinese government. Although it may have been unintentional, the Chinese government has been playing an unmistakable part in church growth and ministry.

Pray that the Lord would guide and direct WorldServe as they continue their work. If you would like to help train business and church leaders in China, contact WorldServe by phone or through their Web site.

International (MNN) -- For less than $100, you can help establish a church

International (MNN) — Pastors in China and Cuba need your
help to make disciples in their nations. Now that's possible through WorldServe
Ministries.

"In the past we've done this program and sponsored
hundreds of different pastors in those two countries," said WorldServe's
Ken Leggatt. "One thing we didn't do was supply our supporters and
constituents in North America with information about the pastor they were
supporting.

"Due to security concerns in these two Communist
countries, denominations weren't comfortable sharing that information in the
past."

However, that information is now available, so sponsors can
build a relationship with the pastor they've chosen to support. WorldServe will
send sponsors biographical information about the pastor they're supporting, updates, prayer concerns, and
an annual "report card" detailing what's happened over the year, .

"We're really excited to distribute that to our
supporters in North America here so they can build a strong relationship with
those pastors that they're supporting."

Adopt-A-Pastor supports pastors while they evangelize and
plant churches in unreached communities. Less than $100 can support a pastor in
either Cuba or China. But what exactly is your money used for?

"The support that WorldServe is providing is a two-three year bridge to establish a tithing church," Leggatt explains.

Generally, pastors are given a one-way ticket to minister in
an unreached area. Arriving as a stranger in these new communities means
starting from scratch with no support system.

"They arrive in
a new town, and they don't have any relationships or contacts within the
community. They don't have a job, typically."

Churches planted by the pastors eventually grow to the
point where their members can tithe on a regular basis. Until then, WorldServe
provides a living stipend.

"The stipend is a two-three year commitment that
WorldServe provides, not to give them a paycheck or living expenses, but as
assistance in meeting some day-to-day expenses and doing evangelism work in
those communities."

WorldServe hopes eventually to sponsor up to 1,000
missionaries in each nation of China and Cuba. Currently, around 150 pastors
need sponsorship.

"As we get
sponsors for these pastors, we'll add more," says Leggatt, "but we're
starting small with them to build the program and make sure that we've got kinks
ironed out as we go forward."

Leggatt adds that WorldServe strives to build good relationships
with denominational partners in these countries and supporters in North America.
