Nigeria (ODM) — A suicide bomb blast on Sunday in the Christian-dominated Sabon Gari district of Kano, Nigeria has killed four people. Witnesses say that the explosion was caused by a bomb in a car.

According to reports from Open Doors USA, the blast could be heard from several miles away. Police suspect Boko Haram is behind the attack. The group also claimed responsibility for two other explosions last month in the capital, Abuja, that killed more than 120 people and wounded more than 200. Boko Haram has been fighting for the implementation of Islamic law throughout Nigeria.

They’ve also targeted this area, known for its nightlife, multiple times.   Multiple blasts in Sabon Gari killed at least 24 people last July, and a suicide bomber drove a car filled with explosives into the neighborhood’s bus station in March 2013, killing at least 25 people.

What’s more, Open Doors says the situation for Christians in Nigeria, particularly the 12 Nigerianorthern provinces governed by Islamic Sharia law, is growing more volatile and dangerous.

Boko Haram evolved from a small gang of rebels in 2002 to a group of empowered insurgents.

Please pray for God’s comfort to the families of the three men and one girl who died in Sunday’s attack. There is a concerted effort to destroy the testimony of Christ in northern Nigeria. Pray that fellow believers in Nigeria will experience God’s peace and courage. Pray for wisdom for church leaders as they minister to God’s people in these dangerous circumstances.

  • With three daughters having graduated from secondary school in N. Nigeria, we have a deep concern for those believers who are under attack by radical muslims. May God’s watchcare be over the pastors and Christian workers and the Church as a whole there that their testimony will be felt in a greater way. (Mrs.) Betty Thompson
