Uganda (MNN) — As Uganda responds to an Ebola outbreak, ministries continue meeting physical and spiritual needs.
As of early June, Uganda had recorded at least 15 Ebola cases and one death in an ongoing outbreak. Brian Dennett with AMG International says, “This is a very serious disease. This seems like a serious strain.”

Officials have closed the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo as a precaution. Otherwise, schools, businesses, and public spaces remain open.
“Reports from our team in Uganda indicate that the situation is very limited. It’s being managed well by the government,” Dennett says.
Even a limited outbreak underscores the need for trained medical workers across Uganda. Dennett says that’s one reason the ministry launched a nursing college in the country years ago.
“Uganda actually has one of the worst nurse-to-patient ratios in the world, and recognizing that a number of years ago, we established a nursing college there,” he explains.
The college can train about 400 students at a time. Along with medical skills, students are equipped to serve as Christian healthcare workers.
“We’re training medical professionals to serve as medical missionaries, so they’re learning not just to heal physical bodies but also to minister to people’s spiritual needs,” says Dennett.

Several classes have already graduated, with hundreds of nurses serving throughout Uganda. Dennett says their presence is especially valuable during public health emergencies. He says:
“As this virus continues to evolve, having nurses and medical professionals right there in the field is so important.”
AMG International is celebrating 30 years of ministry in Uganda this year. “We have schools and childcare centers serving thousands of children and their families. We also provide pastor training and other discipleship programs throughout Uganda,” says Dennett.
Pray for the organization’s ministry as it equips nurses to serve across Uganda. Also pray for its many other outreach efforts throughout the country. Pray also for wisdom and protection as health officials work to contain the Ebola outbreak.
