Indonesia (MNN) — More than 6,000 are dead. More than 600,000 people are sleeping outside because more than 135,000 homes were destroyed in Central Java, Indonesia’s earthquake last month. The world has largely forgotten about the devastation. Even Indonesia’s government has failed to get engaged.
World Hope International hasn’t forgotten about those in need, says World Hope’s Keith Norris. “Our World Hope office was just 40 miles from Yogyakarta, where the earthquake did so much damage. So, we were able to respond quickly to send truckloads of relief supplies.”
World Hope provided tarps, food, clothing, medicine and other relief supplies initially. However, Norris says that focus has changed. “We’re trying to help people rebuild homes at this time. That’s the biggest need that people face. We used up a lot of funding for the relief supplies, so we don’t have a whole lot left. So, we could really use some more funding for this work.”
According to Norris, this is a great opportunity for you to be a ‘doer of the Word.’ It only takes $5,000 to provide a new home for a family of five. He says that funding does so much more. “We’re a Christian organization and we work closely with the churches there and hope that doing these good deeds, helping these people out in time of need, will plant seeds in their hearts and make them more responsive to the Gospel and the ministry of the church.”
They also need prayer support, says Norris. “At this time our team members are living at the foot of Mt. Merapi which has been in the news a lot. It’s spewing a lot of ash and they’re having to wear masks to keep from breathing in the volcanic ash. So, they’re a little bit worried at this time while they’re trying to focus on their ministry to the earthquake victims.”
