USA (MNN) — There are millions of orphans around the world. Many need food, clothing, shoes, medicine and most importantly love. Buckner Orphan Care International is doing all of that through their various programs. With the help of MNN radio affiliates WGNR and WMBI (Moody Broadcasting) they’ve started another one. It’s called, “Undie 500.”
Buckner’s Amy Norton says, “Our second most needed item requested from orphanages around the world is underwear. And, as you can imagine in many cases they have very few pairs of underwear for a child and sometimes none.”
With WGNR located in the Indianapolis, Indiana area, it was a perfect fit for them to participate, says Morning Host Kelli Thomson. “Around the time of Memorial Day when we have the Indy 500 in Indianapolis, we decided to try the Undie 500 to see how many pairs we could collect to help the kids.” They collected more than 11,000 pairs of underwear.
Program Director for WMBI, Chicago Collin Lambert says they just completed their Undie 500. He says they’re still counting, but the total is over 60,000 pairs of underwear.
Moody Bible Institute trains students to be missionaries, pastors and youth pastors. Lambert says, “That translates into what we do on the air which is to do our best to help people to be proactive in getting our listeners to get out there and do the work of the Kingdom.”
According to Norton, WGNR and WMBI are providing essential tools to help them share the Gospel, even if the tools are pairs of underwear. “When we go in and take something that they so desperately and urgently need, it opens the door for us to be able to actually get in orphanages which otherwise wouldn’t allow a team of Christians in to share the Gospel with the children.”
