Myanmar (MNN) — A comic book helps disciple-makers reach farther and wider

Myanmar (MNN) — This is a frontline update from Myanmar and a call to prayer and action.

Mike* with Global Catalytic Ministries says there’s a massive movement of God happening in Myanmar. But, “it’s hard to share these types of stories because the persecution is so high.”

Myanmar’s civil war has killed over 75,000 people and displaced more than 3 million since 2021, according to UN estimates. Although last week the military junta signed a ceasefire with the Ta’ang National Liberation Army — a key rebel group in the north — the nationwide chaos has no real end in sight.

GCM lost contact with dozens of believers after a devastating 7.7-magnitude quake struck Myanmar in March. Dozens more recently lost their lives at the hands of the military.

In that loss, Mike still says, “There’s so much more to these people. [It’s] one of the largest movements on earth that no one knows about. Under the nose of such hatred and evil, God is moving and moving in such a powerful way. This is what He does all over the world.”

Recently, disciple-makers gained a new tool for spreading the Good News: a comic book version of GCM’s “Creation to Christ” story series.

“The way that we make disciples is we build relationships with individuals, and then we share stories,” Mike says. “We are discipling them in understanding God’s character without them even knowing it from the beginning.”

He says that in other contexts, such as the Middle East, visual aids are frowned upon. But this comic, created by a former Buddhist-turned-Christian, is more than welcome in Myanmar.

(Stock photo courtesy of Pixabay)

“Even the visual aid of it — because a lot of them don’t read or write — the visual aid of it is making just a profound impact. We have images of them discipling monks and monk children,” Mike says.

Find your place in the story

Please pray for the gospel to reach more people, and for wisdom and protection for Burmese believers in danger.

“[Pray for] blindness to the enemy, [and] infiltration at the highest level with the gospel of Jesus so that the [junta] government falls and the transformation happens at the highest level,” says Mike.

Finally, please consider helping to recoup the printing costs of the comic book. In response to the March 28 earthquake, GCM invested above and beyond the funds they raised for relief and aid. One of those expenditures was for printing the comic books.

“We knew that the desperation that they were feeling, these are the ingredients where the gospel just spreads like wildfire,” says Mike.

Support ministry in Myanmar with GCM with a gift of any amount.

On Tuesday, the military junta declared a ceasefire till the end of May, ostensibly to help with earthquake recovery efforts. However, during the previous April ceasefire, war monitors reported dozens if not hundreds of breaches by the junta, including relentless bombings of areas such as Rakhine state’s Kyauktaw township.

Few people in Myanmar, if any, expect this next ceasefire to be different.

Meanwhile, the UN World Health Organization says nearly 6.3 million people need urgent help. Brian Dennett with AMG International describes quake survivors still living in makeshift shelters.

“Rainy season starts normally in May, and that’s coming, and that’s just going to be very complicated for them,” he says.

Into the massive needs has stepped the network of churches AMG works with. Dennett says they have come alongside hundreds of families with generators, food relief, and other aid. They have been in the process of repairing 26 homes.

“As always, at the center of everything we do is the gospel. So we are not just providing humanitarian aid; we are also providing hope and sharing Jesus as we go about this. And we have the most committed team of gospel-centered workers right there in the field,” says Dennett.

Find your place in the story

As Myanmar navigates internal pressures and desperate needs, would you prayerfully consider giving financial support?

“Christians all over the U.S. have been very generous and given towards this, but our fear, with news coverage coming to an end, [is] it’s really becoming more difficult to raise funds — and yet there’s still a huge need,” Dennett says.

“We do not have the cooperation of the government there, so that’s challenging. If anyone would like to help, you can simply go to amghelp.org and you’ll find Myanmar earthquake relief right at the top of the list.”

A gift of $400 covers the cost of a generator, $100 will provide a temporary shelter, and $50 will provide a family food package.

“Thank you all so much for your prayers and for your support. Our brothers and sisters in Myanmar really need us,” Dennett says.

Myanmar (MNN) — Dozens of aftershocks unsettle the people of Myanmar, but Trans World Radio prepares to broadcast where true hope is found.

Myanmar (MNN) — As earthquake recovery crawls forward in Myanmar, the military junta has extended its temporary ceasefire against rebel groups to April 30.

More than 140 aftershocks have terrified the region since the first quake nearly four weeks ago. Daniel Saputra* serves with Trans World Radio in Southeast Asia. He shares that people in the city of Yangon are still living on the streets, unable or too afraid to take shelter in damaged buildings. Now the rainy season is coming.

“Monsoon [season] is always bad for the people in Myanmar because even without the earthquake, when the monsoon comes, then there will [be a] flood in many different places,” Saputra says.

TWR partners are on the ground in Myanmar sharing limited immediate aid. But their next thrust is to translate a trauma response radio program into Burmese.

“During that kind of [disaster] situation, people start to ask about lives: ‘Where is God in all this? [They] start to ask about, ‘If there is a God, then why [does] he let things like these terrible things happen?’ What will happen to their future life after their husband passed away, or their whole family was wiped out by the tsunami? The things like that,” Saputra explains.

(Photo courtesy of Trans World Radio via Facebook)

The program Hope Prevails was originally developed after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunamis. It will share true hope for earthquake survivors in the name of Jesus.

Saputra says the program’s translators have leeway to adapt the content to fit Burmese contexts. They are working with a group of counselors in Southeast Asia. Previous translations of the program have been fruitful, he says.

“Our experience is that once we produce that program, that will [be] like a door opener, so that we can actually reach out deeper to the people’s heart. Then we build trust with the local communities that we are actually an organization that not just want[s] to broadcast something, but we really, really want to touch their heart. We really, really want to help them to recover from this trauma that they have in their life.”

Each episode closes with contact information inviting direct conversations. “Some of our listeners write back to us and even call back to us and ask questions, and that actually bring us to a deeper conversations with them,” Saputra explains.

Find your place in the story

Please pray for wisdom for translators working this month and in early May, as they consider potential religious and political barriers to their message.

Pray for safety for TWR’s partners as they travel in Myanmar’s politically instability.

Pray also for God to open the hearts of listeners to receive the hope of Christ. Pray for open doors for TWR to share more programs with listeners in Myanmar about where eternal hope can be found.

Even the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck on March 28 hasn’t stopped the military junta from bombing villages.

“It’s a multiplied crisis because of the coup that happened several years back. The military took over the nation, and they are still fighting an insurgency in the country,” says Joe Handley with A3.

“Some of the original governments, as well as [the] majority of people really don’t stand for this military. So the [earthquake] crisis is exacerbated because, sadly, the military is bombing their own people. They’re using the crisis as a cover to kill some of those insurgency players.”

The 7.7- and 6.5-magnitude quakes and aftershocks on Friday have killed at least 1,700 people, with hundreds still missing. The tremors reached even to neighboring Thailand, where at least 18 people in Bangkok lost their lives and dozens remain missing after a high rise under construction collapsed.

Responses to the disaster

Despite the devastation, the disaster has prompted a strong international response. Rescue teams from China, India, Russia, Thailand and more nations have arrived or will soon.

Handley says there’s also an incredible inter-faith response happening within Myanmar.

“You’ve got Catholics and Protestants, even Buddhist and Muslims banding together united to help the people. It’s kind of unheard of, really, in Myanmar’s history in many ways, to have all these faith communities working together,” he says.

Even with the help coming in, Myanmar’s situation is incredibly complex and the window for rescuing people trapped in the rubble is coming to an end. Pray for God’s mercy!

In that complexity, A3 is doing reconnaissance this week to identify whether they can get aid in. For now, Handley says, “my colleague from Myanmar is really praying that the global Church will rally behind the people and the churches of Myanmar.”

You can be part of that rallying through your prayers. Pray for power to be restored in the quake zones and for open channels for aid to get through to the people who need it, rather than other powers that be.

Look for more coverage later this week for other ways to come alongside A3’s gospel-centered response.

“Whenever we’re doing aid-related efforts — helping the needy, providing food, providing shelter, rescuing people — the center of it is faith in Christ. So as we’re reaching out, the churches keep that center stage,” Handley says.

Over the years, A3 local partners across the continent have responded to many disasters.

“Ever since [a tsunami crisis in Southeast Asia], the mutuality and trust of the A3 alumni network of churches across the spectrum — every evangelical kind of background you can imagine, denomination and independent groups — they learn from each other,” says Handley.

Myanmar (MNN) — Ethnic and minority groups claim a victory against a harsh military junta.

Myanmar (MNN) — Earlier this month, Myanmar’s ruling military junta lost a key base in the city of Lashio in Shan State to rebel forces. The rebel alliance is largely made up of ethnic and religious minorities standing against the State Administration Council, which has used brutal tactics against civilians since seizing power in 2021.

A man we’ll call Peter serves with A3 in Myanmar. “They’re losing a lot of men, and they’re losing a lot of land too, and mostly in Christian areas.”

Peter says churches in the war zones are getting hit hard but non-believers are seeing Christ’s love contradict the propaganda they’ve heard about Christians.

“The juntas, their teachings are like, ‘They will just kill you straight away. These Christians are ruthless, they’re barbarians,'” Peter says. “But when these non-believers want to fight back, they run into the jungles, [and] it was a whole different story how these Christians welcomed them with open arms, giving them food, support, help.”

The future is unsure, but Peter says gospel ministry is spreading for now. Churches give shelter and medical care to refugees. Pray for them.

“We want to end this war fast, like really fast. We need support internationally, we need support for ammunitions,” Peter says. “We didn’t ask for this war — the junta bought this war to us.”

He prays every day for the airstrikes from the military junta to stop.

“If it’s ground forces, we can fight. We win a lot of battles, and we can still take on artilleries. But the planes, the air assaults, those are very bad,” Peter says.

“When [the military is] retreating or they’re losing, the planes don’t come to us (the rebel forces). Mostly they just go into villages or cities and bomb hospitals, bomb kindergartens, bomb schools. So then our [forces] would retreat, help the people — and on the way they will ambush us again. That’s the tactics that they were using.”

Pray for strong faith among Christians fighting in the rebel forces.

“I have friends who lost their faith because dealing with this war, [the] things that we had to do, the things that we’ve seen. It’s, it’s just ugly,” Peter says. “Some of them start questioning, ‘Where is God? Why is He letting this happen?’”

Myanmar (MNN) -- April was a tough month for believers in Myanmar.

Myanmar (MNN) — April was a tough month for believers in Myanmar.

Officials released more than 3,300 people from prison, including a Baptist pastor, in mid-April to mark the Buddhist New Year. On the night he was released, police re-arrested the pastor, his wife, and a Christian colleague.

It is not an isolated incident. “This re-arresting of innocent people, like this pastor and other Christian leaders, has been a practice they’ve been doing ever since the coup,” AMG International’s Brian Dennett says.

“The intent is to cause fear and insecurity among the church congregations and local citizens.”

Junta leaders believe the Christians have power and influence over their villages and congregations. Four days after the Buddhist New Year arrests, Myanmar’s army attacked a Christian-majority village.

“[At] two o’clock in the morning, they dropped the bombs, injuring many [and killing] a Sunday school teacher from an AMG church and a child. That teacher’s mother was also injured; [she] lost her leg in the bombing,” Dennett says.

“This is the second time they’ve targeted this village since January. They want to show people they have power over your life and that only when the population submits and obeys the government will there be hope for them.”

The Light ASEAN Hostel focuses on meeting the deepest spiritual and physical needs by providing aid, relief, shelter, and educational support for displaced children from Myanmar.
(Photo, caption courtesy of AMG International)

Pray for AMG International as it provides help and hope in the name of Christ. “Every time we reach out, we are looking to share our hope in Jesus,” Dennett says.

“The hope is not in any government, particularly not this military junta, and we also meet their very deep physical needs.”

You can financially support AMG’s work here. AMG and its church partners are supporting a refugee community from Myanmar in Thailand.

“We have built homes and a school and are attending to people’s medical needs [through] a clinic. It’s a bustling, busy community,” Dennett says.

“One thing we’ve had a particular concern for is all the unaccompanied children and youth. These are kids who have been separated from their families and are living alone in this refugee community,” he continues.

“We are trying to expand and build more housing for these kids and a school. We already have one school there, and we need another desperately.”

A military fighter jet recently bombed Kanan, a village held by opposition forces near the border with India. “One of our courageous national missionaries reported that an A5 military fighter jet dropped four 250-pound bombs on Kanan village,” AMG International’s Brian Dennett says.

“The attack happened on Sunday morning during the church service, so those attending were killed or injured right within their building.”

According to local media, at least 17 civilians died in the attack, including nine children – and nearly two dozen people were injured.

“As of yesterday, [our partners reported] 11 of our brothers and sisters dead, including several children,” Dennett says.

When three ethnic minority militias allied on October 27, 2023, the junta began increasing air strikes on villages like Kanan.

Survivors of the latest attack fear another bombing, and they’re asking the Lord to intervene.

“They all fled to neighboring villages because what was left is just a mess, and there are few places they can go,” Dennett says.

“They are resting on their faith in Jesus, the only hope any of us have. But that’s so real for them every day as they face the loss of loved ones.”

“We already responded by delivering aid and resources directly to the scene, caring for those families,” Dennett says, but “our staff in the area need prayer, and we also could use more resources to help.”

We want to be known as a region of prosperity, not a region defined by insecurity,’” Greg Kelley of Unknown Nations, formerly World Mission, says.

“It’s hard for them to move forward economically [with] constant upheaval. The other piece of it (the alliance) is their efforts to become less dependent on Western aid.”

Challenges remain, however. While recent coups have propelled military leaders to power, these takeovers also signal regional instability and a power vacuum that terrorists may exploit.

The Sahel region had more deaths from terrorism last year than South Asia and the Middle East/North Africa regions combined. Attacks have left three million people homeless in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

“You have these (terrorist) groups wandering through and causing so much turmoil, and you have [millions of] people that are being displaced. [These conditions] make it very difficult to share the Gospel,” Kelley says.

“Insecurities absolutely impact Gospel efforts among the largely unreached people groups in these countries.”

Nonetheless, believers offer help and hope in the name of Jesus. “The indigenous leaders are very well positioned because they understand the dynamics,” Kelley says.

“Indigenous leaders are ready to take the Gospel into the (unreached) places; they just need a motorcycle; they need some humanitarian aid or assistance.”

Unknown Nations provides the tools and resources necessary for outreach. Here’s how you can help. Most importantly, pray. “The Lord gave us specific instructions,” Kelley says.

“He said, ‘Pray to the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers.’”

Three Chinese warships arrived in a Myanmar port yesterday amid rising security concerns. Battles unfold daily, and nearly 200 civilians have been killed since the end of October.

“The military has been bombing and attacking villages. [In] one where we work, there were six adults and three children killed in recent attacks,” AMG International’s Brian Dennett says.

Consecutive military governments have waged war against armed ethnic groups for decades, destroying villages and uprooting more than two million people. The current rebellion started on October 27, displacing 335,000 people in one month.

“This year alone, we’ve provided thousands with food and other urgent needs. But there’s so much more to be done,” Dennett says.

“Pastors in our network have been crying out for help with health supplies, food, and other relief items that we’ve been trying desperately to provide.”

AMG partners with churches throughout Myanmar to provide help for today and hope for tomorrow. Support AMG’s work in Myanmar here.

“Everything we do at AMG revolves around the Gospel. So, as we serve, we are sharing the hope that we have in Jesus.”

Some church members rely on AMG’s food aid to make it through the week. Pray for believers in Myanmar as they navigate political instability and uncertainty.

“Several families worked in foreign factories that closed due to the military regime and their control over everything,” Dennett says.

“We heard that 80 percent of these foreign factories closed, the employees [were] all laid off; they are now without work.”

Myanmar (MNN) -- Myanmar’s junta government faces biggest challenge since 2021 coup.

Myanmar (MNN) — Myanmar’s junta government faces its biggest challenge since taking power in a 2021 coup.

“In late October, three defense groups came together, formed an alliance, and they intend to stretch this military government beyond capacity,” AMG International’s Brian Dennett says.

“They’re calling it the Three Brotherhood Alliance.”

Over a hundred army soldiers accepted payment from the Three Brotherhood Alliance to lay down their arms yesterday. It’s the largest surrender since widespread conflict began two years ago, giving the alliance traction across northern Myanmar.

“They’ve been able to capture several key towns [and] military posts” in the past two weeks, Dennett says.

“It’s the greatest test this government has had, giving a lot of hope that maybe they (the government) could be defeated.”

Armed ethnic groups have been fighting Myanmar’s central government for greater autonomy for decades, displacing more than a million people.

AMG’s national missionaries have provided 237 families with relief packets!
(Photo, caption courtesy of AMG International)

“The people of Myanmar have suffered so much, and the level of anger and frustration at the continued horrors the military has inflicted on its citizens is just unbelievable,” Dennett says.

Relentless violence and desperation open doors for the Gospel. AMG International works alongside local Christians to deliver help and hope in the name of Jesus. More about that here.

“Both pastors and our church network in Myanmar, and our extensive team in Thailand, [have] been working to provide food, health care, relief items, [meeting] urgent needs ever since this coup began in 2021,” Dennett says.
