Cambodia (MNN) — In October, multiple tropical storms dumped rainfall on Cambodia.

Cambodia (MNN) — In October, multiple tropical storms dumped rainfall on Cambodia. The flooding killed 42 people and destroyed over 150,000 homes in 19 provinces. Now, the United Nations is calling for $9 million in aid, hoping to care for those most vulnerable.

To make matters worse, the flooding has washed out several key roads and bridges, hindering travel and the delivery of assistance to those most in need. Thankfully, Cambodia has limited its COVID-19 outbreaks, with almost no cases in the country since the summer.

Greg Kelley talks about World Mission’s response. “In Cambodia, it was primarily the Buddhist community that was affected. As the body of Christ responds, which we’ve seen through our efforts, hundreds and hundreds of people are getting just the basic necessities of survival. I mean, we’re talking about food, shelter, clothing, blankets, and mosquito nets.”

All of these products will save lives, even the mosquito nets. As people lose their homes, they become very vulnerable to malaria. Read more about the devastating effects of Malaria on the modern world here.

New Christians

Kelley describes the impact of this ministry. “For the hundreds of people that we were able to minister to, it was unconditional. It was just giving it to them in love. Half of these people, and this was around 300 people in one instance, became followers of Jesus. Our partners, as they’re distributing this aid, share the Gospel message. And half of the people, half of them from unreached people groups, received Jesus just because they were so touched by the expression of love.”

Kelley says World Mission will focus on discipling these new Christians, providing audio Bibles in their language, and training Christian leaders.

Praise God for these Cambodian believers, and pray they would be safe after the flooding. You can support World Mission’s relief efforts by donating here.

Burkina Faso (MNN) -- It's World Malaria Day, but many in Burkina Faso suffer daily

Burkina Faso (MNN) — Malaria afflicts 216 million people annually and claims the lives of about 655,000. Today, thousands around the world are working to decrease those numbers.

Today is World Malaria Day, and NGO's all around the globe are advocating the provision of mosquito nets, mosquito-repellent coils, medicines, and other resources to put an end to an otherwise preventable and treatable disease.

Apostolic Church of Wemtenga Child Development Center, run by Compassion International, recently organized a malaria awareness campaign in Burkina Faso. It was simply a part of what Compassion International does on a regular basis.

The purpose of the campaign was to educate parents on a disease that has seized many of their children. Parents were taught how to avoid harboring mosquitoes which could easily infect children with plasmodium, which is responsible for malaria.

A Compassion staff member says most parents had no idea that stagnant water, household refuse, and other rubbish in the home could increase the risk of malaria. Parents are not only more conscious of their kids' health now, but they're even more willing to take their children to the doctor when they show symptoms.

Many of the children registered with the center also received mosquito nets. Children who have since joined the program have yet to receive nets, though. They have been given mosquito coils in the meantime, but these coils which repel mosquitoes only when lit last only about 10 days.

The Compassion staff is so dedicated to taking care of the community, that they have gone knocking on every door to find out who does not have a net. "If need be, we will write a proposal to be able to provide all of the children registered at our development center with nets," says the center director.

This kind of dedication to physical wel-lbeing provides Compassion with even more credibility to share the Good News. Pray for opportunities to do so as the center continues to care for the physical needs of the community.

Compassion works to prevent and treat malaria not just today, but every day through various means. Click here to learn how you can help Compassion "bite back."

Africa (MNN) -- Generosity provides for mosquito nets goal

Africa (MNN) — On April 25, World Malaria Day, Childcare
Worldwide asked people like you across the world to fund mosquito nets for families
in Kenya and Uganda.

Over the last several months, the response has been
tremendous, and Childcare Worldwide was able to purchase 550 nets and then
distribute them across the two countries.

Thanks to generous donors, hundreds of lives are no longer
at risk of receiving potentially deadly bites from malaria-carrying mosquitoes
while they sleep at night.

Of the people Childcare Worldwide distributed the nets to,
families in their Survival Pak program received the most. These poor
families also receive food in these Paks, saving their lives and improving the
quality of their life. As they receive food and nets, they witness Christ's love
in His followers' actions and have reason to renew their hope for their
futures.

Other recipients of nets include Childcare Worldwide's
sponsored children from their children's villages. These children not only
receive education, but they also learn about Christ's plan of salvation for
them.

As Childcare Worldwide celebrates the success of this last
initiative, they are still in the process of collecting more nets to save more
lives. Click here to help fund more nets.

Also, pray for the people who have already received nets.
Pray that this gift will open their hearts to how much Jesus cares for them.

International (MNN) -- World Malaria Day is Sunday

International (MNN) — This Sunday, April 25, is World Malaria Day. According to Yahoo News, nearly two billion dollars were spent on the prevention of malaria last year alone.

Still the problem persists. There will 350 million people at risk of malaria in 2010, Yahoo also said. And Max Lange of Childcare Worldwide said every 40 seconds a child is dying of malaria.

So, as World Malaria Day raises awareness, Childcare Worldwide is helping out in the communities they already serve.

"This is where chemically-treated nets are coming in. They're providing a very wonderful protection," said Lange. These efforts are focused in Uganda and Kenya.

Currently, Childcare Worldwide's goal is 500 nets: "Now, that would take care of most of the children and families who are in our immediate area where we are working."

But they do not want to stop there. After collecting and distributing nets for the children in their children's homes and school, they want to expand their prevention to the surrounding villages. While doing so, they will reach people who have never heard about Christ's love and plan for their lives.

"We want to reach out to the villages and show the people: 'Here's a mosquito net. And do you know why we are doing this? Because Christ loves you,'" Lange said.

For one net, the cost is just $10. Click here to fund a net.

Additionally, Childcare Worldwide has a clinic to treat individuals who already have malaria, but Lange said, "Prevention is always the best thing to do."
