Cote d'Ivoire (MNN) -- Bibles For The World provides scripture at Love Cote d'Ivoire

Cote d’Ivoire (MNN) – Bibles For The World is spreading the Gospel in Cote d’Ivoire, Africa by working with the Luis Palau Association.

Earlier this year, BFTW provided the Gospel of John to every person who attended the Luis Palau festival in Cote d’Ivoire. This festival, called Love Cote d’Ivoire, took place in Abidjan, the capital city of Cote d’Ivoire. It encompassed several days of events, including: eyeglass clinics, medical clinics, sports clinics, and events at local schools.

The festival had over 100,000 people attend in-person and was broadcast in 59 different nations. Messages centered on the Gospel of John.

The Love Cote d’Ivoire Festival (Photo courtesy of Luis Palau via Palau.org)

Vice President of BFTW Jeff McLinden says, “In Abidjan just last month, there were 19,000 people who registered a decision for Christ… For 20 percent of the crowd to make a first-time decision for Jesus Christ is pretty remarkable.”

For BFTW, this is a very strategic partnership and a good way to spread the Gospel.

“Yes, there are churches in their areas, but every church has a limited outreach. This provides the opportunity for us to really touch a significant number of people, many of whom will be hearing the Gospel for the very first time.”

New believers and church growth

The Love Cote d’Ivoire festival came after almost a year of training and mobilizing local churches.

The Luis Palau Association works with local churches to help build their network and prepare them for the event. It also teaches them how to continue ministering to new believers after the event has taken place.

For this event, there were 2,200 partnering churches and 5,000 people trained in personal evangelism.

With 19,000 new believers in Cote d’Ivoire, it’s likely that churches will grow and expand. There will be many people stepping in to help spread God’s Word and make sure new believers are growing in their faith.

(Photo courtesy of Luis Palau via Palau.org)

“Part of the Palau impact is that they are encouraging a Great Commission focus among the churches that they work with there. They are able to show demonstrable impact through the other kinds of events like this that they have done… they have done hundreds of these events all over the world,” McLinden says.

As a partner with the Luis Palau Association, BFTW is committed to making sure festival attendees receive a copy of Scripture they can read for themselves.

McLinden says, “Our role as a Scripture provider… [is] to make sure the people have the Gospel in their hands. For those people who come to faith, we provide New Testaments in order for them to be able to go deeper into scripture and be discipled through the New Testament and the local churches.”

Next steps

Pray for both new believers and for the churches supporting them. Pray new believers will become deeply rooted in their faith.

“It does put pressure on those churches to be able to accommodate so many new believers. We anticipate that there will be many new plants that will occur as a result of this amazing growth in such a short time. We need to be praying for those new church plants as well,” McLinden says.

United States (MNN) -- CityFest ends, but the churches carry on

United States (MNN) — CityFest has come and gone in West Michigan. But, in a region heavily influenced by the Church, was CityFest a challenge or a breeze?

“I think every city is hard and easy in its own way. For West Michigan, I think people are open to God, to talking about God, to talking about the Church. But our heart is to get beyond that. Our heart is really to remind people of the intimate relationship they can have with Jesus Christ, with the God of the universe,” Wendy Palau with the Luis Palau Association says.

“West Michigan might have this unique, Christianized culture, but West Michigan is made up of millions of people who are trying to figure out, trying to understand who is God—what is my relationship with Him? And we are simply calling them to walk with Him, to be in true honest relationship with Him.”

CityFest’s Foundations in Personal Evangelism

Palau spoke at the CityFest women’s luncheon in Grand Rapids, MI. The women’s luncheon was one of many events to make up CityFest West Michigan. These various events provide opportunities for people from all backgrounds and personalities to interact with CityFest and hear the Gospel message.

Wendy Palau speaks at the City Fest Women’s Luncheon in Grand Rapids, MI on September 5, 2018. (Header photo and photo courtesy of Mission Network News)

However, these events work because of local church involvement. For example, local Christian women had the opportunity to be a table host at the women’s luncheon. Hosts could then invite nine women to take a seat at their table during the event. These women could be friends, family, or that girl you always run into at the gym.

CityFest partnered with 435 churches in West Michigan. Palau acknowledges the local Christian community’s joint efforts to bring CityFest to West Michigan are not sustainable. CityFest is structured mostly around personal evangelism instead of mass evangelism for this reason.

“All we do is in, through, and for the local church. Because the local church[es] are the disciplers. The women’s Bible study groups, they’re the disciplers,” Palau shares.

“The table hosts today who have invited nine women to sit are their table, they’re the ones who are going to get the response cards. They are going to receive an email saying this person responded, now you follow up, invite them. The women who respond will also be referred to a local church in their area.”

Be Prayerful, Be Active

Palau explains how discipleship is a necessity for the Christian walk. It is also vital for evangelism. CityFest acts as a catalyst to jump-start the opportunities for discipleship. The event isn’t the end game, though.

Please pray for the people who began their relationship with Christ during CityFest West Michigan. Ask God to strengthen and lead West Michigan Christians in personal evangelism and discipleship. Pray local Christians would reach out into their communities and build relationships for discipleship daily.

Tanzania (MNN) -- Andrew Palau and 700 churches attract more than 125,000 as thousands confess Christ

Tanzania (MNN) — In the heart of Africa's "Harbor of Peace," world evangelist Andrew Palau and 700 Tanzanian churches fostered unity, love, and humanitarian outreach through the Love Tanzania Festival.

The evangelistic event August 11-12 at Jangwani Grounds attracted more than 125,000 attendees and led several thousand individuals in public commitments to Jesus Christ. Palau's biblical messages of hope formed a potent capstone of two days filled with live music performances, freestyle motocross stunts, and games for kids.

With transparency and a passion for the hopeless stemming from his own turbulent beginnings, Palau invited the crowd to "experience the fullness of Christ." He went on to say, "I'm begging you to receive God's grace. Jesus is here. The battle is won."

Tanzanian artists The Voice, Christina Shusho, comedian Masanja, and a national worship team led by Pastor Safari Paul shared the stage with internationally-known recording artists Nicole C. Mullen and Don Moen. World-class BMX and FMX athletes performed high-flying demonstrations rarely seen in Africa, and children of all ages enjoyed a special stage show featuring UK performer Duggie Dug Dug.

"It was fantastically wonderful," a local resident who attended the festival said. "I've been waiting 10 years for this."

Festival staff received approximately 6,300 response cards from the two-day festival, each representing an individual who made a decision to follow Jesus Christ. Over the next few weeks, local volunteers will follow up with each person and help them get connected to a church in their area.

Church leaders representing numerous denominations anticipate that Love Tanzania's impact will be seen and felt for many years to come. "Thank you for bringing this great festival and unity to us," Archbishop Valentine Mokiwa of the Anglican Church said to the Palau team. "It is now our responsibility to do all that we can to strengthen the unity and build on it."

Extensive local media coverage fostered awareness and discussion of the event around preserving and spreading peace in the city. "Hopefully the Palau Association will come again…. Strategies to deter crime should include the role of spiritual outreach," read an editorial in Tanzania's Daily News. "Christianity is still relevant in this permissive tech-savvy modern world of ours." Coverage of the festival campaign appeared in several local and national newspapers, as well as TV and radio programs.

"Dar es Salaam in Swahili means 'the Harbor of Peace.' Truly, Love Tanzania Festival has brought the peace of Christ in a historic way to the churches and to the city of Dar es Salaam," Palau festival director Tim Innes said. "The churches have never experienced this level of unity. God has done it, and we give Him all the Glory!"

During the week leading up to the festival, an international team of volunteers joined local churches in facilitating several service projects and community outreaches. This "ministry week" had its own palpable victories. More than 17,000 people received encouragement, support, and the Good News through clinics, school assemblies, dinners for women and business leaders, and church services across the city. About 2,000 made a decision to follow Jesus Christ at these preliminary events.

The team's four eye clinics provided reading glasses for 8,706 people. Hundreds got in line as early as 5 a.m. each day to be fitted for a pair of glasses. Each patient tested their vision on a copy of the Gospel of John, and for many, John 3:16 was the first thing they saw with their new-found sight. Soccer and basketball clinics hosted by Play for Hope, a team of professional coaches from Rwanda, served 1,520 kids.

Love Tanzania also enjoyed full support of African Evangelistic Enterprise, an international evangelical and development agency operational in 10 African countries, and many of the staff collaborated to mobilize the churches in Dar es Salaam.

"The unity across the churches in Tanzania throughout this campaign has been historic," Palau said. "The heart of the pastors and leaders to make a difference by loving the city and proclaiming this life-changing message will impact Tanzania for generations. I am humbled and honored to be a part of it."

Representatives from churches in Ethiopia, Malawi, Nairobi, Pretoria and Burkina Faso traveled from their respective nations to experience the Palau model for evangelism first-hand and discuss opportunities to work with the Palau Association on similar campaigns over the next few years.

Andrew Palau has shared the Gospel with millions of people around the world. This festival marks his fifth campaign in Africa. Last summer's Love Burundi Festival in Bujumbura drew more than 60,000 attendees. Palau has also hosted events in Kampala, Uganda (87,000 attendees); Kigali, Rwanda (73,000 attendees); and Cairo, Egypt (13,000 attendees). The Secret Life of a Fool, a memoir of his journey from delinquent youth to international evangelist, is available now.

Paraguay (MNN) -- Paraguay is praising God as thousands come to Christ

Paraguay (MNN) — It's been a few weeks, but Paraguayan Christians are still praising God for moving in that part of the world. Joining with hundreds of local churches and thousands of followers of Jesus Christ in two Paraguayan cities, world evangelists Luis and Andrew Palau hosted an evangelistic campaign which ended April 28. Their efforts reached every sector of society from young people to the National Congress.

After a series of preliminary events across Asunción and a stand-alone festival in Ciudad del Este with Andrew Palau, the campaign came to a head as Luis Palau and hundreds of local churches came together to hold a two-night, open-air music festival in the heart of the capital city on Friday and Saturday. Latin American artists Rescate and Alejandro Lerner performed, well-known soccer players Maxi Biancucchi and Javier Alejandro Villarreal shared how God transformed their lives, and Luis and Andrew Palau both presented clear Gospel messages with an opportunity to respond and connect with a counselor for follow-up.

This youthful vibe and billing was no accident. "73% of Paraguay's population is under 35. Our youth is writing the story of this country," said Santiago Maldonado, president of Paraguay's National Association of Evangelical Pastors and a member of the festival executive committee. "We need to lift them up. They are the protagonists of this campaign."

More than 80,000 people attended the final event on Saturday evening; 70,000 attended on Friday. At the beginning of his Gospel-centered message each night, Luis Palau explained that he hoped what he had to say would particularly inspire youth under 25, who comprised more than half of the audience. While response cards are still being counted, early numbers indicate that well over 12,000 people made a decision for Jesus Christ during the week's events. The festival was broadcast live on two national TV networks and around the world via the Internet.

Earlier in the week, Palau and his team visited the Paraguayan National Congress' chamber of senators and chamber of deputies at the invitation of Jorge Oviedo Matto, president of the Congress. The visit marked the first time any public figure was allowed to speak while Congress was in session.

Palau also met with the country's Vice President Federico Franco, the mayor of Asunción, members of the Supreme Court, and the Ministry of Defense. "Our objective was to elevate the gaze of leaders to their spiritual lives, to moral ethics and values," said Palau. "I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to meet and pray with several of the country's top national leaders."

The festival in Ciudad del Este with Andrew Palau led more than 1,770 people in public decisions for Jesus Christ and connected them to a local partnering church. The younger Palau, who also spoke on both nights of the festival in Asunción, said he sees this campaign as only the beginning of the team's partnership with Paraguay. "I can't help but think that the best is yet to come, and that we'll have many more opportunities to serve in Paraguay," Andrew said.

Luis Palau previously hosted campaigns in Paraguay in 1976, 1980, 1982, and 1994. Several of the church leaders and entertainers who helped plan the festival first accepted Jesus Christ during one of these campaigns, including this festival's emcee, national radio personality Oscar Vazquez.

Luis Palau has brought a message of hope through faith in Jesus Christ to more than 1 billion people through radio, television, the Internet, books and articles, including 30 million people face-to-face in 74 nations. Palau's daily radio broadcasts are heard by tens of millions of listeners on 3,500+ radio outlets in 48 countries. He is the author of more than 40 books and countless articles on issues of faith.

Jamaica (MNN) -- Andrew Palau returns to place where he came to Christ

Jamaica (MNN) — When the winter blues take their toll, thoughts of sand, sun, and surf become alluring. Jamaica is an ideal getaway, and for world evangelist Andrew Palau it certainly is, but not for reasons of rest and relaxation. Rather, Palau will go again to Kingston to serve the Body of Christ as it meets an urgent spiritual need.

"Jamaica and its people have a special place in my heart," said Palau, who received Christ when he was 27 years old at the 1993 Kingston crusade held by his father, Luis Palau. It's also where he met his wife, Wendy, who is originally from the island. "So many there have yet to hear the Good News. This festival is an effective way for Christians to invite their friends to come and hear about Jesus Christ."

The 2011 Fun in the Son Festival will be the 9th of its kind and Palau's sixth consecutive year as the featured speaker. Through the hard work of Jamaica Broilers, Glory Music, and the local churches, it has earned the reputation of being the premier Gospel event in Jamaica.

It will be held this year on March 19 and will be hosted under the theme "Kingdom Come." Kids will enjoy the Reggae Jammin' Sporting Zone, and all ages will be attracted to live music featuring Papa San, Tye Tribbett, Carlene Davis, and many others.

The 2010 festival saw nearly 50,000 people in attendance. Event organizer, Glory Music, has moved the festival to a much larger venue at the Mona Bowl this year and anticipates an equally large crowd.

In conjunction with the festival, the local churches will be serving together in a cleanup project to help with some of the damage caused by 2010 floods. In addition, ministry teams from the U.S. will arrive one week early to share the love of Christ in local schools, neighborhoods, and at an orphanage. "These outreaches show that the Gospel is not just a concept," explains Palau. "It's real. The Good News changes lives and perspectives. It compels you to give sacrificially to help and love those in need. It brings hope to entire nations."

Next year, Jamaica will celebrate its "year of jubilee," signifying 50 years of independence from colonial rule. Celebrations will take place across the country, and "Fun in the Son" will expand to be a part of it. Already, church teams from all over the U.S. have committed to accompany Palau and his team in 2012. They will partner with local churches to conduct free medical clinics, outreach activities, construction projects, and to serve as counselors at the festival. For more information about these opportunities in 2012, as well as ministry opportunities this year, visit Andrew's Web site or send an e-mail to info@palau.org.

A future Andrew Palau festival is being planned for August 6-7, 2011 in Burundi, Africa.

Rwanda (MNN) -- Luis Palau Association helps Rwanda's church celebrate a season of service

USA (MNN) — It's been 15 years since more than 1 million people were killed in Rwanda's genocide. Hundreds of thousands of Rwanda's Tutsi and Hutu political moderates were murdered by Hutus under the Hutu Power ideology.

The city of Kigali, partnering with the local church, recently commemorated the genocide over 100 days, and the Luis Palau Association was there to help. They organized a Season of Service campaign: 100 days where Christians went out into the community to provide for the needs of the city in Christian love.

Andrew Palau says, "They had a 100 days of the genocide. They have 100 days of commemoration each year [of the genocide]. This is the 15th year. So, we laid the Season of Service right across that and finished with the festival. We were able to work with 350 churches with the focus of lifting high the name of Jesus and winning people to Christ."

The festival was held over two days at the national stadium in Kigali. Palau says it was a "full-blown music festival, world class extreme sports demos, with a big children's area."

According to Palau, thousands participated. "We had about 75,000 people hearing the Gospel and over 5,000 people responding to it. Some of our staff and the committee are working hard to distribute the decision makers information to the churches and those who will follow up."

Churches helped the community with some road building, home repair and construction, food distribution, water, medical clinics, and simply loving on those in need. Palau says, "We have a continuing goal to bring water into all the schools in Kigali. About 85-percent do not have ANY drinking water, let alone clean drinking water. So we have a family that's moved there for the next three years to work with the city and the churches to bring water."

Palau is asking you to pray for Kampala, Uganda. The community had representatives watching the event with the hopes of bringing the Palau Association's Season of Service to their city.

USA (MNN) -- National newspaper hails Luis Palau Association's Season of Service ministry

USA (MNN) — The evangelical church in North America has been criticized for not being very loving, kind and compassionate. It's been said some Christians are so concerned about people coming to Christ they don't establish relationships with the people they're trying to reach. That's not the case in Portland, Oregon. In today's edition of USA Today, the Luis Palau Association is being recognized for its Season of Service ministry.

The ministry's executive vice president Kevin Palau says it all started with their evangelistic festivals held in major cities around the world where thousands attend and hundreds come to Christ.

Palau says, "What if that festival was a celebration of the biggest community service effort in the history of Oregon? So we met with our mayor and said, 'What are the needs in our community?' And the obvious things came up: helping with public schools, the environment, homelessness, and free medical and dental clinics."

So last year, local evangelical churches committed to providing 15,000 volunteers. Palau says, "In the end, more than 26,000 volunteers from evangelical churches took on hundreds of projects."

That was all celebrated last summer during the Luis Palau Association's Evangelistic Festival.

However, Palau says the Season of Service continues because churches have established goals. "The goal, for example, with the Portland Public Schools is to try to have an official church partnership, at least one church that's in relationship with every public school in the Greater Portland Area. So we're about halfway to the goal."

In some cases, they're providing mentors and reading helpers, and churches are also providing a dozen free medical and dental clinics.

While this all sounds like physical assistance, Palau says it's more than that. "The goal is building relationships: earning the right to be heard. In a place like Oregon where it's not the Bible belt and people are very skeptical, it's actually a big step in pre-evangelism."

While churches in Portland have been reaching out in the community for years, Season of Service has brought them all together. "If it's done collaboratively and in a formal partnership, and in a formal partnership with city leaders and corporate community, everybody wins by the heightened awareness of it."

While the first festival saw about 2,000 people turn to Christ, Palau says this type of ministry will help put feet to their profession. "We know that as we sow the seed, some falls on the rocks, some falls in the hard path and the birds come [and eat it]. And what we're all looking for is that seed that falls on the good soil and produces fruit. And that reveals itself over time."

Palau says they hope to replicate Season of Service this year in Kigali, Rwanda; Little Rock, Arkansas; and Santiago, Chili.
