Missionaries see God’s provision in Papua New Guinea outreach

Papua New Guinea (MNN) — Papua New Guinea can be an arduous mission field. Yet World Missionary Press Scripture booklets in indigenous languages are making a substantial impact.

“The population is spread out pretty far. There are 800 indigenous languages, and so many different islands,” WMP’s Helen Williams says.

Located in the South Pacific, Papua New Guinea consists of a mainland and many islands of varying sizes. As described here on the Embassy of Papua New Guinea to the Americas website:

The overall appearance of the country is extremely rugged, particularly in the highlands, which are characterized by sheer slopes, sharp ridges, fast-running rivers, and the scars of innumerable landslides.

As part of a broader outreach to remote communities, WMP partners recently distributed Scripture booklets at a school.

“It was time to go, but the trek was so bad to get there, they weren’t sure how they were going to get out,” Williams says of the missionaries.

Thankfully, the Lord had a plan. “As the team was wrapping up their session in the school, the sky echoed with a familiar sound, and it was the drone of an aircraft approaching,” Williams says.

“Missionaries looked up, and a Mission Aviation Fellowship plane touched down. All of a sudden, there was the opportunity for the missionaries to return.”

The MAF pilot happened to be dropping off cargo for a contact in the village.

“The team quickly made their way to the landing site; they negotiated with the pilot for a fair price to help them get home,” Williams says.

“As the aircraft ascended, the missionaries reflected on how God had orchestrated their journey. The flight home was filled with gratitude and awe, as most of the boys were flying for the first time.”

There’s more work to do in Papua New Guinea. Help WMP send another container full of booklets to its PNG partners.

“The whole point of all of this is to share God’s love and His word and His salvation with a world that does not know that even exists,” Williams says.

“If you listen to the news, the world is in chaos, but I can tell you God is working. People are coming to know Him. Villages are being changed.”
