Ukraine (MNN)–A woman in the United States was sentenced this month to 12 years in prison for the 2003 death of her 6-year-old son, Alex, who was adopted from Russia.

The case led to a wider discussion over the adoption of Russian children by foreigners. Some Russians are calling for tougher restrictions on international adoptions, while others say the children themselves will be the ones to suffer if the laws are tightened.

The debate spread outside Russia’s borders, and has prompted many surrounding country governments to take action.

Bethany Christian Services reports on a possible moratorium on international adoptions in Ukraine.

The bill has already been proposed to Ukraine’s Parliament and is expected to be voted on in the near future. The legislation is aimed protecting Ukranian children from abuse by foreign adoptive families.

Pray for the children of Ukraine who would lose their opportunity for a loving Christian home if the bill passes. In the interim, Bethany’s staff will continue to minister through social services programs.
