India (MNN) — More than 30-million Hindus are expected to converge on the holy city of Ujjain in central India this month during the festival of Kumbh Mela [pronounced KOOM MAY-luh].

This ancient festival is held in four different cities in India throughout 12-year cycles. Ancient traditions and myths are all a part of the force that drives so many Hindus to the holy cities to take part in this festival.

Hindus believe that pilgrims who bathe in the sacred river Shipra in Ujjain during this year’s festival will be cleansed of past sins and attain salvation.

The Southern Baptist International Mission Board calls Christians to pray that many Hindu pilgrims will find true salvation in Jesus, the Living Water.
