Hajj begins: What happens when Muslims don’t find what they’re looking for?

By May 25, 2026

Saudi Arabia (MNN) – Today is the first full day of the Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca that nearly all adult Muslims are expected to complete at least once in their lifetime. Every year, roughly two million Muslims embark on this spiritual journey. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Nehemiah with FMI explains, “Hajj is one of the most spiritually significant moments in a Muslim’s life. Many pilgrims travel carrying deep questions, burdens, and sincere desires to find forgiveness and peace with God.”

But what happens when pilgrims on the Hajj don’t find what they are looking for?

When Muslims return home from their pilgrimage, they may be disillusioned, confused, and even depressed. Nehemiah shares how his extended family saw this firsthand.

“My father, when he was Muslim, his elder sister committed suicide after returning from Hajj. She gave up her life. So there are many situations at the Hajj, and people have many questions and burdens.”

FMI equips Christians reaching Muslims with the true hope of Jesus Christ.

“Many of our indigenous partners across Pakistan, Afghanistan, Morocco, and the Muslim-dominated nations intentionally engage Muslims before and after pilgrimage seasons.”

Pray for Muslims on the Hajj to, instead, find Gospel truth and even have dreams and visions of Jesus.

Also, Nehemiah asks, “Pray for protection, wisdom, and boldness for indigenous believers serving in difficult and restricted regions. Pray that the audio Bible storyteller devices and Gospel resources would reach the right people at the right time.”
