Malaysia (MNN) – Christians are the minority in Malaysia, a nation dominated by Islam. There, believers are often marginalized by Muslim ethnic groups and pressured to convert to Islam. Most often, these Islamization efforts are coercive or violent, but a new report shows the tactic may be changing.
Recently, without consultation or knowledge, Christians’ identity cards have been marked with a new religious designation.
“They’re legally being changed to become Muslim so their identity now is Muslim,” says Floyd Brobbel with Voice of the Martyrs Canada. “It’s a more forced conversion through what I would see as administrative manipulation.”

Brobbel says the agenda is clear: to strategically shift the religious and political landscape toward Sharia law.
“So now these Christians who were immune from Islamic courts are now going to have to follow Islamic tradition, Islamic law – there’s no recourse for them.”
Brobbel points out that whenever organizations or governments try to pad numbers, things fall flat.
“Just because these Christians now are going to be classified as Muslim doesn’t mean that they’re Muslim in their heart or faith level.”
He says the church is still the church and will carry on its work.
“Christians will continue to do the work of evangelism and living out a Biblical worldview.”
Please pray for Malaysian believers facing this opposition.
“We can pray that the Lord will give them wisdom to be able to navigate these circumstances and that if they have a chance for legal action, that they would be able to do that,” Brobbel says.
Pray that regardless of legal outcomes, they would stand firm in their faith and continue to live out and share the Gospel.
