Mexico (MNN)–The new year is bringing with it excitement for believers in Mexico.

The region has been chosen to host the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) General Council 2006 to be held next summer in Mexico City.

This group of believers represent the largest Spanish-speaking Baptist convention of the world. The summer meetings will be in Mexico’s southern region, where evangelism has taken off. Slated for July 2-8, 2006, the area serves as a highlight to growth in recent years, contrasted by the loss of momentum in the northern counterpart.

That seems evidenced by the growth in the Baptist churches, despite a struggle against a sectarian label. A BWA report shows among the 150,000 baptized believers, the worshipping community of Baptists in Mexico exceeds a half million. In addition, the 1,500 churches reach all walks of life from the poorest to the richest.

The BWA General Council 2006 at Mexico City is expected to be “a great opportunity for Baptists of the world to experience the spiritual dynamic and enthusiastic worship of Baptists of Mexico.”
