Needy kids boosted for school

By August 10, 2012

USA (BOC/MNN) — 16 million kids live in poverty…right here in America, according to the Children’s Defense Fund.

These kids often struggle to come up with the most basic yet needed school supplies for the fall.

Buckner International is proud to be partnering with Staples in its “Staples for Students” campaign to collect school supplies for children in need in the Dallas area.

“Staples for Students” is part of the Staples Do Something campaign that encourages the public to get involved and make a difference in their communities.

If you live in the Northern Texas area, you can donate new school supplies from now until September 15 at the Staples Stores in Dallas. Click here for the map.

The school supplies collected will be distributed at Buckner’s annual back-to-school event tomorrow, August 11, at the Buckner Children’s Home campus in Dallas.

“Our goal with these back-to-school events is to get our kids excited about the upcoming school year,” said Lindsay Miller, regional volunteer engagement coordinator for Buckner ministries in North Texas.

The children in Buckner after-school community programs and Family Pathways will be treated to a day of barbecue, water bounce houses and games, and they will leave with a new backpack filled with school supplies.

Buckner began their Children’s Home in Dallas, Texas in 1879 responding to the needs of several children orphaned by poverty and war.

Today, Buckner Children’s Home group fosters children through two homes on the campus. Children there are wards of the state who have been neglected, abused, or abandoned.

Buckner's Family Pathways ministers to parents and their children in need. The families are given affordable housing, childcare, and training to eventually become self-sufficient.

“We are so grateful for this partnership with Staples, and we know our kids will be thrilled to receive their new school supplies,” said Spencer Watkins, lead life skills specialist for the Buckner after-school program at Wynnewood Community Center. “By giving them the tools they need to succeed, we are preparing them for a more purposeful future.”

In everything, Buckner seeks to enrich families and vulnerable children through Christ-centered values and ministry. By giving a child the tools needed for education along with the message of the Gospel through Buckner’s programs, they can develop into well-rounded individuals able to make an impact for Christ.

Please pray for vulnerable children and families in Buckner’s programs as they prepare for the school year.
