Iraq (MNN) — Gunmen speeding past Father Youssef Adel shot and killed him, according to a news report from Voice of the Martyrs Canada.
The shooting happened two weeks ago, shortly before noon, as Adel was on his way to church from Karradah, Baghdad. He had received threats before in an attempt to get him to leave his post not only in the church but as a school director.
Adel directed a school where both Christian and Muslim students attend.
Christians still only represent 3.3 % of Iraq's population. Voice of the Martyrs Canada's country report said democracy is being pursued, but Islamic extremists often try
to take matters into their own hands in order to enforce Islamic rule.
Christians are becoming increasingly fearful and fleeing to neighboring countries. On the other hand, some Christians have seen this time as an opportunity to share the hope of Christ.
Pray that those who knew Father Adel would have strength and courage despite the loss of their friend. Pray that they will not be controlled by their fear, but rather that they would stand strong because of the hope they have in Christ. Pray that Iraqi Christians would be able to forgive their persecutors.
