Elsewhere, nearly 2,000 international spiritual leaders are gathered this week for a United Nations-affiliated conference on world peace. However, the United States’ largest Protestant denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention was excluded. SBC’s Convention Relations Executive Committee Vice President, Bill Merrell. “It seems to me to be an extension of the United Nation protocols. I don’t see it as a particularly religious thing, as much as a way of using religious vehicles in various parts of the world to carry forward the United Nations’ agenda.” Merrell notes that The National Association of Evangelicals is represented and that Anne Graham Lotz will also be speaking. Other than that, the evangelical voice is silent. “We ought to pray for God’s will to be done in earth as it is in heaven. That means in many respects, that we pray for God to use godly leaders to benefit and to bless the peoples of the world that the Gospel of Christ will make deep penetration.”
