Story number 3 for 5 Jul 2000

“Just keeping alive…we didn’t have water, we didn’t have electricity, and there’s a lot of illness.” That’s SIM missionary Louise Morgan describing the struggle faced by Mozambique’s thousands who were displaced by devastating floods in February. There are still dozens of squalid refugee camps in operation because of the unprecedented destruction. SIM’s Ron Frazee tells us about the current situation. “Water levels in Mozambique have subsided and people are finally being encouraged to return to their homes. In many cases, new land is being parceled out for those who were living in low areas. Relief efforts are being focused on resettlement, rebuilding and replanting.” However there is still malnutrition, poor sanitation, and rudimentary health and education services. SIM is working to partner with churches in the area, evangelize the unreached, and minister to human need.
