US to remove Syria’s “State Sponsor of Terrorism” designation, but Damascus bombing headlines continued instability

By July 14, 2026

Syria (MNN) — U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to remove Syria’s “State Sponsor of Terrorism” designation (SST) after diplomatic talks with interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa. Yet a bombing during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Damascus highlights the country’s continued instability, says Nuna* with Triumphant Mercy Lebanon

“There are so many things that are still happening,” Nuna says. “For example, I heard that there is a fuel shortage. Now they are expecting the same thing to happen with wheat, grains. So there will be a shortage of bread and a shortage of other vital food.”

The current government took over after the fall of dictator Bashar al-Assad in 2024. Removing the SST designation would go a long way towards ending sanctions and increasing investment in war-torn Syria.

“The new president is trying to keep Syria together and trying to do all these deals,” Nuna says. “However, inside the country, there are lots and lots of inner unsettledness and unrest.”

There is almost no infrastructure in Syria. They are lacking a stable currency and functional government agencies. Electricity costs up to forty times more than it used to, according to Nuna. Yet Triumphant Mercy Lebanon cannot cross the border into Syria to help since they are a Lebanese non-government organization (NGO).

“We cannot do it as an organization because of all this government pressure,” Nuna says.

She continues to minister to people personally and has seen countless Syrians come to Christ, even Muslims. Pray that God would continue drawing people to Jesus in hardship and that He would open more doors for people sharing the Gospel.

“[Muslims who meet the Lord] are fearless because they have really experienced God. They have touched Him. They have seen Him. So many of them have had visions of Him,” Nuna says.

“He talked to them, He spoke to them, He gave them a new name, He changed their lives, and these people cannot keep silent.”

Pray for Syria.
