Iran (MNN) -- Bible translators are praising God for progress in a language of northern Iran.

Iran (MNN) — Bible translators are praising God for progress in a language of northern Iran. Transform Iran’s Lana Silk says the Gilaki language has a broad reach.

“There are three million Gilakis living in a predominantly unreached part of Iran,” Silk says.

“There has never been an accurate translation of the Gilaki Bible, and now we’re in a place where we can give them the entire New Testament.”

Along with text, Transform Iran’s team is publishing audio dramatizations of Scripture in Gilaki. More about that here.

“Even before using it in evangelism, we’re already seeing dozens of Gilakis coming to know Christ, just through the process of translation and review of the New Testament,” Silk says.

Work has already begun on the Old Testament translation, and “some of the Psalms are already being audio dramatized today,” she adds.

Once the Psalms and Pentateuch are completed, translators will begin work on select Old Testament books.

“We’re thinking about Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, and Daniel, some of the giants of the Old Testament whose graves can be found in Iran today. These are meaningful stories for people who live in that land,” Silk says.

“We want to give them those texts first, and then as we progress, the plan and the vision is to see the entire Old Testament translated.”

Stage two: Old Testament translation

The next phase of translation work will be finished in no time.

“We have about 150 Bible translators working with us in different capacities [on multiple different languages of Iran.] They’re working 24/7 because there’s such a sense of urgency that ‘This must happen yesterday, so let’s get it done as quickly as we can without compromising quality,’” Silk says.

“For the Torah, Psalms, Proverbs, and some of the very Iran-centric Old Testament books, we plan to have those all finished [in Gilaki] by the spring of next year.”

Praise God for the progress being made in the Gilaki language. Pray for the Church to be established, take root, and grow among this people group.

Connect with Transform Iran here to take further action.

“With $35, we can translate a verse of the Scriptures, and another $15 will give the audio dramatization,” Silk says.

“Maybe we can get together with our family or house group and think, okay, how many verses do I think I can make happen? Could I make a chapter or one of the epistles happen?”

Donate to Transform Iran’s Bible translation work here.

International (MNN) -- ASM’s tools make it easy to share Jesus across languages

USA (MNN) — As a popular immigrant and refugee haven, it’s not uncommon in the United States to hear more than one language at your local grocery store.

This diverse environment means American Christians don’t have to go overseas to reach the nations with the Gospel. We can be a global witness right in our own backyards.

Joshua Harrison with Audio Scriptures Ministries admits it’s not easy. “I think that reaching across language barriers and cultural barriers is always going to be a challenge. But that’s a challenge that does face us right here and now in our own neighborhoods.

(Photo courtesy of Audio Scripture Ministries)

“We are called to bring the Gospel to those around us, regardless of your thoughts on the political situation, regardless of your thoughts on where you could serve better. God has placed you where you are right now with spheres of influence where you can bring God’s Word.”

Ministries like ASM make it easier to share God’s Word in other tongues — without ever taking a language class! Their audio recording teams complete more and more Scripture translation recordings every year. Those Scripture recordings are freely available on apps by groups like Scripture Earth, Wycliffe Canada, and Global Recordings Network.

Harrison says, “Our Latin America Director Jim Loker met someone at a cell phone shop and discovered that this was a native [Mam] speaker [from Guatemala]. They had recorded his language. This man’s face just lit up when he saw that he could play [the Bible] in his own language. He said, ‘I must write, I must call my family and tell them about this back in [Guatemala]!’

“You don’t have to learn everyone’s heart language. You can just point them to God’s Word in their own heart language.”

In your neighborhood or on your travels, you can ask the Lord to connect you with people who would enjoy hearing God’s Word in their heart language.

(Photo courtesy of Audio Scripture Ministries)

“If you find someone who is not a native English speaker, just boldly ask them, ‘What language do you speak? Where do you come from?’ Introduce yourself! When you find out what language they speak, find the resources that are available. You can contact us or there are a lot of good phone apps with audio Scriptures you could download…and listen to right there.”

You can also connect friends with ASM’s audio Bible players. ASM even sees people send audio Bible players to family outside the US or take them on their own missions trips.

“Reach out to us. We’ll be happy to equip you with the tools that you need in your neighborhood [or] that you need on your trip or your church mission trip. We want to help you be able to share God’s Word in audio.”

As ASM equips the Church for the Great Commission, Harrison asks, “Pray for the funds for more audio Bibles as well. The hunger is great and…in many cases, these audio Bibles function as laborers in the harvest field. We’re so blessed to have good tools.”

Between praying, giving, going, and sharing, there are several avenues you can take to have an eternal impact in the lives of others.

India (MNN) - Increased pressure from anti-conversion laws sparks new ministry opportunities.

India (MNN) – As more Indian states adopt policies that criminalize religious conversion, the question looms, “Is the window closing for those who share the Gospel?”

John Pudaite, president of Bibles for the World, knows very well the challenges that face Christians living in India and neighboring Nepal, whose parliament voted to adopt anti-conversion laws in the fall of 2017. He says, “In some states, they are requiring anyone who wants to convert to another religion to [receive] advance permission from the local judge or magistrate of the district. And this, of course, is a tremendous barrier to anyone wanting to become a Christian or to change their faith in that way, to convert out of Hinduism or one of the other religions. This is just another way that the evil forces are using the machinery of the government against the Christian and the cause of Christ in India.”

New Ministry Opportunities

(Image courtesy of Bibles for the World)

Despite increased pressure within the countries, Pudaite says hope is not lost. In fact, he says, the laws bring new ministry opportunities.

“It certainly has become more difficult for us to be directly involved in a lot of what’s going on there,” he shares. “But at the same time there are other ways that we can be involved creatively as we go in there, in a different and less prominent way. It is so important that the work in India, that the growth of the Kingdom be carried by the local people, by the nationals to their own people. And that the Church there does develop a level of sustainability, not dependent in any way on the West. I look at these things as a part of the maturing process, the part of the maturing of the body of Christ in India.”

The Miracle of MegaVoice

Pudaite’s voice lightens as he recounts the story of how God’s word is reaching new ears in Asia.

“About a year ago, I heard that a group was taking 39 of the previously unengaged unreached people groups in Nepal. We started supporting their efforts with printed scriptures. As they were out in the field, we got feedback that there were such low levels of literacy that they really needed some audio form of scripture.

“We were able to get some MegaVoice units – solar-powered audio players – and we chose the ones that had a flashlight as well as FM radio as there are a number of Christian radio stations that are operating in Nepal. So, we were going to provide these to these “engagers” as they’re called, these pastors and missionaries and evangelists that are working with these groups. We went to deliver them; just the day before, evidently, they had been praying for some of the tools that they needed to do their ministry more effectively.

“I got up and started to explain to them about the MegaVoice unit, and I accidentally hit the wrong button and turned on the flashlight portion of it. The place just erupted in cheers and in clapping and hallelujahs, and I was wondering ‘what is going on? It’s just a flashlight.’

“Their leader turned to me and told me, ‘You know, yesterday they had just shared about their real need for flashlights to help in their work because they’re traveling in areas without electricity. They’re seeing this as an answer to prayer.’ I said, ‘Wait until they see the rest of what this unit can do!’ We started playing through the Bible in Nepali and some of the different things that are pre-recorded, and they were just ecstatic. It was wonderful to be able to hand that over and to be able to equip them, strengthen them in their work as they go out to these unengaged unreached people groups.”

Continue in Prayer and Support

Pudaite believes it is essential for Body of Christ to continue to offer prayer and support for the people of India and Nepal.

“There are so many wonderful things happening there. Previously unengaged unreached people groups that are being adopted, workers are being identified and being sent to these people. We need to keep praying for each and every one of those efforts.

“There’s attempts at doing much faster translations of God’s word, just so that some of these unengaged unreached people groups at least have some small portion of scriptures, that they at least hear the message of Jesus Christ. Everything we can do to support these efforts whether it be in prayer or financially, encouragement – these are all things the body of Christ here can get involved in.”

(Photo credit: Victor Ngo via Flickr)

“[Those] 954 languages represent over 6 billion people who speak or sign one of those languages, so that’s over 85% of the world’s population,” Lohr adds.

Of the 17 new language releases that brought FCBH to the 954-mark, there are “three different sign languages that will now be available through the Deaf Bible app.”

The good news doesn’t stop there, though.

“We really believe that the Great Commission should be completed within this generation,” Lohr says. “It used to be ‘could be,’ [or] ‘maybe’ – all of those different questions.

“But we look at the technology, we look at the translations that are completed, we look at our ability to do recordings and other partners who are doing recordings, and we say that it should be completed in this generation.”

Technology plays a significant role. Not only does it make the Bible translation process faster, it increases the ability of FCBH to get Scripture to people in a language and format they can understand.

“We’re going to hit 1,000 languages in about May this year,” shares Lohr. Furthermore, “we believe we’re going to get to the 2,000-mark in much less time than it took to get to the 1,000-mark.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-142456" class="wp-image-142456 size-medium" src="https://www.mnnonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/FCBH_proclaimer-india-02-05-16-300x199.jpg" alt="The Proclaimer was developed as a playback device for poor and illiterate people lacking the resources to receive God’s Word.
In the late 1980s, when FCBH first began recording audio New Testaments, they could only do Bible translation in English. God has been expanding their horizons ever since, using the latest technologies and digital resources.

With another major milestone in sight, enthusiasm is rising.

“If we can hit that 2,000 [language] mark, we’re talking about 97% of the world’s population [speaking] one of those 2,000 languages.”

You can help Faith Comes by Hearing cross the finish line in two easy ways:

PRAY

“Lift us up for the resources to be made available, that our field recording partners will be in good health and protected; [pray for] everybody here on our staff,” requests Lohr.

Find more prayer needs here.

Ask the Lord to provide FCBH with the resources it needs for Bible translation.

Pray for the health and protection of FCBH’s recording partners.

Pray for the staff and leaders of Faith Comes by Hearing.

GIVE

You can make a significant difference by helping FCBH get God’s Word to every person who needs it. Whether the Lord has placed a passion for Bible translation or military outreach on your heart, there’s a FCBH project that could use your support.

(Screenshot courtesy of Faith Comes By Hearing)

“We hate asking for [money] in Christian ministry, but it is the case: we need to have the funds to do it,” says Lohr. “We could go out and get 50 more recording teams, but…we need to have the funds to do it.”

Mexico (MNN) — It’s pretty obvious when buildings change, but what about individuals?

How do you know if a friend or relative who says they’re a Christian isn’t just faking it?

For Jim Loker with Audio Scripture Ministries, the proof is in the pudding.

“As we see people’s lives change, as we see them coming together into small groups or attending church, we know that God has gotten a hold of their lives. This isn’t just some religion,” says Loker.

He’s referring to the Gospel growth ASM’s ministry is seeing in Oaxaca. The southwestern Mexican state is, in ASM’s words, “a patchwork of indigenous peoples and cultures.”

Reaching Oaxaca for Christ

In Oaxaca, audio New Testaments have been translated into local languages since 2002. The state is home to over 100 languages, and Scripture has been translated into most by Wycliffe Bible Translators.

But, since about one-third of Oaxaca residents are illiterate, it doesn’t make much of a difference whether printed Scripture translations are available or not.

“They really need the Scripture in their heart language if God’s going to speak to them like He wants to,” Loker observes.

Over the years, ASM teams have recorded and distributed audio New Testaments in dozens of Oaxaca languages.

“The vast majority of the people where we work will not read in their mother tongue.”

Right now, ASM is averaging about one recording every several months. A team of 5 or 6 technicians not only record, but promote and distribute the audio files.

Find out how audio Bibles are made.

“For many, many people who receive [these] audio Bibles, they’re hearing God’s Word for the very first time in their own language,” explains Loker.

The seed of God’s Word has been planted, and now it’s starting to grow.

“As people listen, the Word of God really is bringing back some great results.”

Harvest time in Oaxaca

(Photo courtesy Jim and Jamie Loker)

Over the last couple of years, Loker says, more than 1,200 people have received Christ as their Savior. More than 850 have been baptized, and 24 new churches have been planted since Loker’s last visit to Oaxaca.

“God’s Word has taken effect, and as we plant and water, God provides the increase,” he says. “God’s working in their lives, and we’re seeing some great things happen.”

There are a few ways you can help God’s Kingdom grow even more in Oaxaca.

PRAY

“Pray for people that don’t have access to God’s Word,” Loker asks. Pray for new believers as they grow in their faith and are discipled. Pray for ASM’s team as they work tirelessly to make God’s Word in audio available to all.

Follow ASM on Twitter for more prayer needs.

GIVE

Translation isn’t free, but the Word of God needs to be–especially in a place like this. Can you support the work of ASM? Help ASM provide the Way, the Truth, and the Life by donating a solar-powered audio Bible.

GO

“We’ve sponsored mission trips; we have several going to Oaxaca in the coming months,” shares Loker.

Eurasia (MNN) — High-level authorities of the European Union met in Luxembourg recently to discuss a unified response to the Middle East refugee crisis.

The Associated Press kept a running tab of key developments:

An additional $451 million (400 million euros) will be used for addressing the refugee crisis.

Border security will be increased to “speed up and intensify” deportation.

A resolution allowing the EU to crack-down on human traffickers coming from Libya will be put before the UN today.

Bavaria’s government is considering “self-defense measures” to limit immigration.

The Czech Republic plans on increasing security on its border with Austria.

While overwhelming, the crisis is also creating new opportunities for reaching refugees in Europe, Faith Comes by Hearing (FCBH) reports.

Bible-believing Christians are among the European populations welcoming refugees to their countries. FCBH is helping them share the hope of Christ with hurting and desperate people.

Not all refugees can read, so having audio Scriptures in refugees’ heart language is invaluable.

FCBH is sending 50 BibleSticks in 10 different languages to a refugee center in Austria. Gospel workers will use them when reaching refugees in a nearby camp.

Please continue to pray for those working with refugees in this part of the world.

In the Middle East, as war rages around them, volunteers are bringing thousands of audio Scripture devices to refugees. More than 7,000 BibleSticks, Mini-Proclaimers and Micro-Proclaimers are being shared with families who are desperate for hope.

Please pray refugees who receive these materials get a chance to speak with believers about Jesus Christ, and His free offer of salvation.

More and more fruit is being borne in refugee camps throughout the region, FCBH reports. The BibleStick plays a significant role, as the majority of these refugees do not read their heart language.

Mozambique (MNN) — Recent flooding isn’t the only thing causing trouble in Mozambique. According to Audio Scripture Ministries (ASM), there continues to be a high level of political tension.

There have been many threats to “destabilize” the country because the opposition party feels October’s elections were rigged, ASM reports. ASM’s work in Mozambique has been growing by leaps and bounds, but political unrest could put everything at risk.

Please pray for calm, and pray that a peaceful solution can be found.

ASM Mozambique

ASM began working in Mozambique nearly a decade ago, partnering with national believers to build their first recording studio near Xai Xai. ASM provided much of the initial technological training, as well as discipleship materials.

“Our goal in Mozambique is to end up with a completely nationally-directed audio Scripture ministry,” stated ASM’s former Executive Director Tom Dudenhofer in 2005.

Today, ASM has far-surpassed their goal. Along with updating their headquarters in Xai Xai in August 2014, ASM’s national ministry partners are expanding to a second location in central Mozambique.

This is what makes your prayers crucial.

Ongoing political instability and armed conflict slowed ministry work for a while, but peace and order were somewhat restored following presidential elections in October 2014. This allowed ASM’s partners to re-start work on the expansion project in central Mozambique.

In December, national workers “broke ground” on a multipurpose recording studio/distribution center and pediatric hospice/palliative care facility. They hope to reach completion by April 2015, but that finish line is dependent on factors like funding and political stability.

Pray for calm in Mozambique. Praise God for progress made on the new studio, and pray for cooperative weather and safety so the work can continue. Pray also for the safe arrival of audio Bibles shipped to Mozambique earlier this month.

Mozambique (MNN) -- A ministry updates on God's work and how he is blessing them.

Audio Scripture Ministries is building a new studio in central Mozambique. (Photo by Audio Scripture Ministries)

Mozambique (ASM/MNN) — What can make a terminally ill and constantly pained child not only smile, but sing with joy?

Audio Scripture Ministries believes in and has seen the power of the Gospel to transform lives, perspectives, and hearts. In Mozambique, ASM is watching their ministry grow. Earlier this month they began construction on a new studio in central Mozambique.

As the year comes to an end, ASM shares the following story updating us on their work and what it’s doing to change lives:

ASM’s ministry in Mozambique is continuing to expand. The political instability and armed conflict that have brought some challenges to the project over the past year have finally subsided, allowing the ministry to move ahead with some new projects. One of the big new projects we are working on is the expansion of the ministry into the central part of the country. In the past years, we have done several audio Bible distributions and recordings from the central part of the country, but the challenges of traveling logistics, poor infrastructure, and limited connections in the area have made ministry there challenging.

In order to more effectively record and distribute audio Scriptures in the central part of Mozambique, ASM has recently broken ground on a new “satellite” training and recording studio/distribution center in the central part of the country. This new studio will be much smaller than our headquarters in the southern city of Xai-Xai, and it will be located 1,000 km to the north in Chimoio. It is our hope to be able to complete this new studio by April of 2015, but that will depend on funding and a host of other factors that we tend to face in a location such as Mozambique.

Earlier this year, ASM began an initiative to make audio Scripture materials available to the Chitewe people of central Mozambique. There are about 150,000 people that speak the Chitewe language, but they have no written Bible and virtually no Scripture materials available in any form. We began at square one with trying to collect Scripture songs and by beginning a translation project to at least make some Bible stories available in the Chitewe language. We have been able to assemble several hours of Scripture-based audio, and in the past months we have already started to see an impact.

One project we have the privilege of helping with is the first pediatric hospice/palliative care project in the entire country. This is a brand-new project that aims to provide a higher quality of life for children suffering from terminal diseases (mostly AIDS) through comfort care and the use of audio Scripture materials. The first patient in the program was given a Wildlife STORYTELLER loaded with Bible stories and songs just weeks ago, and there has already been an amazing change in his life. This little boy, who never smiled because of the constant pain from his advanced AIDS, is now smiling and singing. The reality is that we don’t know how long he has yet to live, but he now knows that God loves him. He has found that ultimate joy even in the midst of his pain.

Praise God for what He is doing through ASM. If you would like to partner with them and stay updated on how God is working through audio Scripture around the world, click here. (For giving to this project, look at Chimoio.)

Indonesia (MAF/ MNN) — Seeing people receive God’s Word in their heart language for the first time is one of those “Bucket List” kinds of moments.

According to UrbanDictionary.com, the term “bucket list” refers to a literal list of things you want to do or accomplish before you die. It comes from the phrase “kicking the bucket,” which is sometimes used to refer to dying.

Dave Ringenberg, a Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) pilot serving in Indonesia, describes his Bucket List-worthy experience in an e-mail shared with MNN.

My scheduled flight was to Anngruk that day, an airstrip about one hour southwest of Sentani, inhabited by the Yali people group. I found out the previous day that I was to carry a couple of Indonesian gentlemen from a ministry called Faith Comes By Hearing. The purpose of their visit was to distribute devices containing the audio version of the New Testament. The written Bible has already existed in their local Yali language for some time, so I’m not sure I grasped the significance of what this audio version would mean to the local people until I heard chanting and celebrating from the village women as I shut down the Cessna Caravan.

A huge group of villagers gathered around Pak Chandra and Pak Nathan, the men from FCBH. As the plane was unloaded, the boxes of audio Bibles were placed in the middle of this huge gathering. Chandra began to explain in Indonesian what these audio Bibles were and how to use them. Nathan translated Pak Chandra’s words into Yali. There were two types of audio Bibles: a smaller one and a larger one. Both are solar powered, and the larger one also has a hand crank.

And then Chandra played it for the people. They stood in rapt attention as a dramatic voice spoke from the device itself, reading the first few sentences from the fourth chapter of the book of Matthew in their native tongue. One lady off to the side kept raising her hands to the heavens and then bringing them to her heart. Right then and there I knew that this was pretty special, as they were going to have the Word of God in audio form in their heart language.

Before I knew it, the ceremony was just about complete, but prior to our departure, the local pastor offered up a prayer of thanksgiving to God for these wonderful gifts from caring Christians around the world. As he began his prayer, I felt a humility before the Lord and I had to get on my knees. In my heart I could hear God’s Word resonate: “Whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life” (John 5:24). I was moved by these events as I humbly remembered that God’s Word will not return void. Praise God.

India (MNN) — Remember that Global Terrorism Index (GTI) we told you about yesterday? The Global Terrorism Index Top 5 countries land on MNN headlines a lot, since terrorism is often linked to religion.

“Religion as a driving ideology for terrorism has drastically increased since 2000. Prior to 2000, nationalist separatist agendas were the biggest drivers of terrorist organizations,” the GTI notes in its summary. Groups aligning with radical Islam–Islamic State, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, and the Taliban–were responsible for two-thirds of last year’s terror-related deaths.

But in country #6, most fatalities caused by terrorist attacks occur at the hands of Communist extremists.

JP Sundararajan with Audio Scripture Ministries (ASM) says their partners are very familiar with India’s top terror group. “They’re called ‘the Naxalites,'” he explains.

“I have been in areas which are controlled by the Naxalites, and there is a lot of fear because you just don’t know…. A run-in with the Naxalites could turn out to be deadly.”

There are Communists in India?

The Communist Party of India – Maoist (CPI-M), also known as “the Naxalites,” was formed a decade ago following the merger of two Communist groups. These groups had been active in India since 1967. The armed wing of this group is called the Peoples Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA).

In August 2008, PLGA assassinated the well-known Hindu Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, reportedly for the swami’s involvement in 2007 riots. Orissa state’s ruling political party at the time, the BJP, quickly blamed Christians for the crime. Accusations and widespread persecution followed, even though PLGA openly took credit a few days after killing Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati.

Now known by many as the “Orissa massacre,” the anti-Christian spree displaced some 50,000 believers and took the lives of hundreds.

Terrorism vs. ministry

One of ASM’s partners, Indian Evangelical Mission, has been working among the Bison Horn Madiya for years.

“The Indian Evangelical Mission has been working hard in translating Scriptures for them into their own language,” Sundararajan explains.

In the south-central states of Chattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, Naxalites have stopped the little-known people group Bison Horn Madiya from going to church and meeting with missionaries.

But, these terrorists overlooked one thing, missionaries told ASM.

“They said, ‘People may stop us from attending worship, but they’re unable to stop us from listening to God’s voice through this audio Bible.'”

Before they were cut-off from the Bison Horn Madiya, missionaries gave believers 100 audio Bibles recorded in their heart language, Koya Mata. God’s timing is part of what makes this story even more powerful, says Sundararajan. ASM sent the 100 players only a few months prior.

Terrorists, Communists, and you

Sundararajan says the best ways to help the Bison Horn Madiya and India’s other little-known people groups are three-fold. The first and most important way to get involved is to pray.

“Pray for those front-liners, the translators, and people on our staff in India, who are carrying these Bibles into very troubled areas at great risk,” says Sundararajan.

Pray also for the Bison Horn Madiya to accept Christ as Savior and Lord as they listen to His Word.

“If you are praying, and you want to do more, help us by buying more Bibles. For $35, you are able to help us provide an audio Bible to a [group] like this.”
