Evacuations due to Boko Haram violence

By May 9, 2014

bokoharamNigeria (WMI/MNN) — Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Thursday, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan vowed in his opening remarks to find more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram Islamist rebels.

Jonathan also thanked foreign nations including the United States, Britain, France, and China for their support in trying to rescue the girls who were kidnapped from a secondary school on April 14.

At the same time, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) released the names of the missing girls. According to CAN, of the abducted, 165 were Christian, and 15 were Muslim. There were some reports that handfuls of girls managed to escape their captors, although those reports are largely unverified. Accurate counts of the abduction and conflicting information between police and the government add to the confusion. However, at the close of the story we’ll share the list as it was released by CAN.

Meanwhile, the constant pressure of the group has proven disruptive to outreach ministries. World Mission International helps local believers distribute the Treasure, a solar-powered audio Bible given to oral learners in their own language.

World Mission just received word from their contact in Nigeria that the situation has gotten exceedingly dangerous due to the insurgency. On Thursday, their contact said they were suddenly forced to withdraw five missionaries from the field. The area was close to where 150 were killed and 11 girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram. He goes on to write:

We must move our converts, also, as this is important not to leave them there. We will keep them at school of missions and feed them there instead of leaving them behind. That will mean that we must evacuate about 200 persons from these stations as we will not allow them to run to refugee camps and suffer. We will keep them and feed them. We will be doing some kind of teaching for the children and help them until the military finish operations where they are from. We need your prayers.

In light of this plea, World Mission is asking you to join them in praying for their Nigeria team. wmilistenThe goal is to help create a prayer hedge to shield, nurture, and empower the mission, leadership, staff, the national partners, and the organization of World Mission as a whole.

On the Facebook page 8thirty8, these thoughts were shared: “Every Christian home must raise a lamentation to heaven daily. Let God arise and defend His name, honour, and majesty. Let a 15-minutes cry to heaven be done in every Church every time they gather. Oh God, rend the heavens and come down! Why should the people say, ‘Where is our God?'”

We pray that all of the girls are returned safely, and that God will be glorified in all of this! We praise his name and trust that all of the girls will be in his perfect care and will feel his love!

  • Heavenly Father, I know that you are an all good God, that you are a God of justice and mercy. Lord I lift up these girls and their families to you, I lift up the whole country of Nigeria to
you, Lord Jesus. I pray that the Christians that are amonsgt those names, that they would shine their light in the midst of this darkness that even their captors hearts would be convicted, and that they would be an inspiration to any of the other girls that may not be Christian. But Lord, I know that you care for each and every one of those girls and I pray that you would intervene, in the name of Jesus. Your word says that if we ask you anything in your name but it shall be done, and I have faith that your will will be done. In Jesus Christ name, amen.
