Story number 1 for 14 Dec 2000

Our newscast begins today with a look at the chaos in Peru. The Andean nation’s Congress has decided to throw President Alberto Fujimori out of office for moral unfitness. Meanwhile, Fujimori fled to Japan to escape the corruption scandal, and angry Peruvians are calling for stability. It is here that Global Advance’s David Shibley helped church leaders through a recent pastor’s training conference. “We saw a seething unrest right underneath the surface; everyday Peruvians want to see justice and equality. It’s a pristine opportunity for the church to rise to the occasion. And that’s why we were so grateful that one thousand, nine hundred and 98 pastors and church leaders from all up and down the Amazon came to this conference.” Shibley says the church needs prayer, though. “Christians need to be praying for our brothers and sisters in Peru, that they will rise in strength and be a bold proclaimer of the Gospel, but also of justice, truth and peace, that they genuinely will be peacemakers.”
