Story number 3 for 20 Nov 2000

A Senior Chinese legislator recently contested accusations of religious persecution in China. He told Compass Direct that the Chinese people fully enjoy freedom of religion, and said allegations made by the US State Department are groundless. However, he did not address the increased pressure put on unregistered evangelical church groups by the Chinese government. Chinese Christians now number nearly 10 million and the lack of trained leaders has caused the authorities to cast a suspicious eye on the church.
